This is a guide to secrets and easter eggs in Paper Mario: The Origami King, for the Nintendo Switch. Read on to learn about references to other Nintendo titles and about the secret ending!

Stage Clear Pole
Enlarge Location: Picnic Road Hit the ground below the flag pole and retro steps will rise. Use the steps to slide down the pole to hear the classic stage clear jingle!

Location: Overlook Tower The terrace is surrounded by the classic, 8-bit style wall and bushes. When you reach the 4th floor, you'll see a pencil drawing of 8-bit Mario.

Doki Doki Panic
Enlarge Location: On the way to Autumn Mountain When Mario first meets Bobby, Bobby will say "Thinky Thinky Panic." This is a reference to Doki Doki Panic, a Japan-only game for the Famicom console, which became the basis for Super Mario Bros. 2.

Enlarge Location: Big Sho' Theater After Mario rescues Birdo, she says she has "Mario madness," which is a reference to Mario Madness, the US-only subtitle to Super Mario Bros. 2.

Location: Shangri-Spa After rescuing a blue-robed Snifit, you will be able to buy the Retro Soundbox accessory, which resembles a Famicom Controller. Using the accessory will change Mario's sound effects to his retro sound effects from Super Mario Bros.

Princess Peach Incarnations (Multiple Titles)
Enlarge Location: The Princess Peach In the Wheelhouse, you'll find framed images of Princess Peach's past incarnations from previous Paper Mario games, including Paper Mario, The Thousand-Year Door, Super Paper Mario, and Sticker Star.

Enlarge Location: Bonehead Island / The Great Sea After clearing Bonehead Island and setting sail, a giant fan will emerge from the sea and blow the fog away, allowing you to sail across the entire Great Sea. This fan is the same Fan Sticker from Paper Mario: Sticker Star!

Donkey Kong and Samus (Metroid)

Location: Shogun Studios (Staff Room) Inside the staff room, you'll find huge paper mache masks that resemble Donkey Kong's head (Jungle King Mask) and Samus's Helmet (Space Warrior Mask), from the Metroid franchise!

The Legend of Zelda

More than easter eggs, it seems that The Legend of Zelda franchise also served as an inspiration for the world of Paper Mario: The Origami King, with large chunks of the game containing parallels to the Triforce and Wind Waker. Here are the Legend of Zelda easter eggs in the game.

At Diamond Island, Mario must collect three orbs from the Trials of Power, Wisdom, and Courage, which is a reference to the 3 pieces of the Triforce, the ever-present relic and source of power and balance in the Legend of Zelda games.

Wind Waker's Sea Chart

When Mario begins his voyage across The Great Sea, he receives the Sea Chart to help him navigate. This is a big nod to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, where Link also uses a sea chart to navigate across the ocean, to save his sister. The two sea charts even come with the same features, such as the coordinate grid and newly-visited islands automatically added to the map!

Secrets

Bobby's Ghost

After Bobby's sacrifice at Sweetpaper Valley (at the end of The Princess Peach), head back to take photos at Shogun Studios. Your photos will develop with Bobby's ghost next to you!

Bowser Bested by Princess Peach

Return to Graffiti Underground later in the game and you'll find that it'll be redecorated with graffiti, telling the story of Bowser attempting to capture Princess Peach. In the end Princess Peach saves herself, no thanks to Mario, Luigi, and Toad!

Secret Ending

This is the ending you get when clearing Paper Mario: The Origami King 100%, and it's added in the form of a bonus scene that plays after the credits.

Olivia and Olly

In this scene, after everyone has left the town's center, the Origami Craftsman sneaks back to the miniature Origami Castle and places miniature origami versions of Olly and Olivia on the castle's thrones.

The camera focuses on Olly and Olivia's happy faces and the scene fades to black.

It isn't clear whether the Origami Craftsman folded them to life again, but Olly and Olivia's happy faces are enough to cheer us up!
