This is a guide on how to build a strong team without spending money in Fire Emblem Heroes (FEH). To learn about rerolling, the free units, and useful player skills, read on!
List of Contents
Fire Emblem Heroes is a game that you can play without spending money.
As you progress through the story, you earn orbs as a reward, so you can stock up and pull on any banner that you wish.
For instance, you can get over 140 orbs just by clearing the Normal difficulty of the story, which is roughly about $82 worth of orbs for free!
You can also get orbs from quests, login bonuses, the Arena, etc., so playing everyday means that you can accumulate a lot of orbs.
You obtain free units by playing through the story, so it's possible to clear higher difficulty maps like Grand Hero Battles just by using them.
There are several free units, with some requiring a bit of legwork to obtain, but all of them are given without any charge.
If you're just starting out, you can focus on the story quest without worrying about game modes that involve other players like the Arena, Aether Raids, or Pawns of Loki.
You can avoid those game modes for the time being, as your barracks will not have enough units yet.
While many would think that you need to spend a lot of money to get to the highest tiers of the Arena or Aether Raids, you don't need to.
It will take some time, of course, but you can start with picking the units that will form your core team and start investing in, merging, and building them.
If you get a Mythic or Legendary Hero for free, decide if you want them to be in your team and then invest in them.
You can either spend Heroic Grails to merge free units or only spend your orbs when a Hero you're currently investing in is a focus unit.
With this method, you will slowly build up your teams and climb to the highest tiers of the other game modes.
Guide to Building Your Arena Team
It is possible to reroll (resetting your saved data with the intention to acquire better Heroes or units in the start) in this game. 5★ Heroes or units drop very rarely, so they are not easy to obtain.
To make your game progress smoothly from the onset, we recommend rerolling for strong Heroes. If you want to enjoy playing this game for a long time, be patient and reroll until obtaining your desired Heroes!
If done efficiently, you can reroll about once every ten minutes. For more details, see the page below.
Each unit has Individual Values or IVs, which you can check for.
IVs can differ per unit, but you can still build them however you want even with less optimal IVs. You can also change IVs with Trait Fruits.

These units are available to you when you play through the game. You can access the Heroes' Path on the upper left of the main menu screen, below the castle upgrade icon.
It could take some time to get to rank 15, but getting Legendary Ike is worth it!
You can take your time in choosing which free unit to get from the banners that are currently active, though the recommended units are Brave Camilla and Brave Edelgard.
You can obtain more free units by clearing Grand Hero Battles, as well as playing Tempest Trials.
Grand Hero Battles cost no stamina, so you can play as much as you like.
Free 5★ units from Tempest Trials are given when you hit a score of 15,000.
In FEH, you can upgrade any Hero to their maximum ★ rating. This mechanic of increasing a Hero's ★ rating is called Unlock Potential. Increasing a Hero's ★ rating will allow them to learn even stronger skills than the ones they possess currently, allowing you to increase your party's potential.
In order to use Unlock Potential, you will need materials called Hero Feathers (Feathers) and Badges.
4 Star Hero Unlock Potential Tier List
Hero Feathers | Badges |
★ Rating | Required Material |
---|---|
Upgrading 3★ to 4★ | Badges:20 Hero Feathers: 2,000 |
Upgrading 4★ to 5★ | Great Badges:20 Hero Feathers: 20,000 |
You will need 20,000 Hero Feathers to raise a unit's rating from 4★ to 5★. Since that is a rather high cost, decide which unit's ★ rating to raise only after careful consideration.
FEH Battles employ many components, such as weapon affinity, effective attacks, terrain, and more. Certain units cannot move over certain terrains, so learn which movement types are compatible with each terrain!
Movement Types | |
---|---|
Infantry Heroes | Flying Heroes |
Cavalry Heroes | Armored Heroes |
The foes present in each battle will differ, so you must change your strategy as well. Still, knowing basic battle strategy will be useful for any battle that you participate in, so learning in the beginning is a huge advantage.

The Weapon Triangle | How is Damage Calculated? |
Terrain like rivers and forests are prominent in several maps.
These types of terrain restrict your units depending on their movement type.
How far your unit can move and their attack range depends on their movement type.
When putting together a party, make sure to check each unit's movement and weapon types so you know how well they'll be able to perform on the map.
Make sure to check the skills of any enemy units!
You can be caught off guard with an enemy unit having Wings of Mercy 3 swooping in to take out your team because of their low HP ally, find you can't deal enough damage due to effects like Lull Atk/Spd 3, or can't kill the last enemy unit because they have Vantage 3.
Make sure that you're also equipping your team with Refined Weapons or weapons that have special effects.
However, this can also go for the enemy team, so check to see what kind of weapons they have because they might have something that is effective against a unit on your team or weapons that accelerate their Special.
Be wary of weapons that either buff the enemy unit, debuff your unit during combat, or even nullify your unit's own buffs!
Summoner Support is a way for you to improve your relationship with your chosen unit and give them beneficial effects.
You can access Summoner Support through the Interact With Allies tab in the Allies menu.
Only one unit can receive your support at any given time.
Ally Support is a way for two units to improve their relationship and give each other beneficial effects.
You can access Ally Support through the Interact With Allies tab in the Allies menu.
Only one unit can receive one Ally's support at any given time.
With both Summoner and Ally Supports, bond levels are indicated from C to S.
Depending on the bond level, a unit's HP, Atk, Spd, Def, and Res will increase.
Summoner Support S will grant a unit HP+5 and Atk/Spd/Def/Res+2.
Ally Support S will grant a unit Atk/Spd/Def/Res+2 if the supported units are adjacent to each other and Atk/Spd/Def/Res+1 if they are 1 space away.
If you link your Nintendo account, you can get rewards such as Orbs, Stamina Potions, and more.
These are important in playing F2P so be sure to check them out!

This party's aim is to be well balanced in the spread of power and can take out a variety of enemy units.
Inheriting Reposition makes retreating or engaging easier for your units, while inheriting Death Blow on Reinhardt increases his overall firepower.
Peony serves not only as a dancer but also a support unit that gives great buffs.
