Marvel Rivals Accidentally Bans Non-Cheaters

SteamDeck, Mac, And Linux Users Report Bans

Marvel Rivals’ developer NetEase accidentally bans several non-Windows users while mass-banning suspected cheaters.

Last January 3rd in the early hours of the morning, community manager James announced on the official Marvel Rivals Discord server that "some individuals playing in compatibility layer programs have been mistakenly flagged as cheaters, even without using any cheating software." NetEase has apparently been banning cheaters left and right recently, but has mistaken several non-Windows users playing on compatibility layer software—namely, the Mac, Linux-based systems, and even the Steam Deck—for cheaters and hackers.

The issue has now been resolved, with the affected players’ bans lifted. "We have identified the specific reasons behind these false bans and have compiled a list of affected players. We have lifted these bans and want to express our heartfelt apologies for the inconvenience this has caused." They also added that should any player encounter actual cheating behavior, they should promptly report the incident. Should one be wrongfully banned, players are also free to appeal to the customer support team in-game or even on Discord.

For the SteamOS in particular, this doesn’t seem to be the first time it’s been mistaken for cheating software. Their compatibility layer, Proton, is notorious for triggering certain anti-cheat systems.

In-Game Character Bans Should Be For All

In other news, there is a different kind of ban that competitive Marvel Rivals players do want to be implemented in the game—character bans. Character/champion/hero bans are a way for competitive player teams to remove certain characters of their choice from character selection, preventing bad matchups to their advantage or taking a core character from the enemy team. It is also a way for players to test different strategies with different champions and expand their repertoire, especially if their best hero is usually banned.

In fact, Marvel Rivals does have this feature—but only in Diamond rank and above. Frustrated players have aired their sentiments on the game’s subreddit. User Expert_Recover_7050 sharing exasperatedly on a thread: "Over and over again. Cant ban it, can't beat it. Yeah I know YOU on your 17th alt ‘bronze to grandmaster challenge’ for your next youtube video can beat plat players in this comp but me, as a DESERVINGLY SO plat player can not beat other plat players when they have such disgusting advantages. Why can diamond+ players have fun in the game but we cant?"

Many high-ranking players agree with them, saying that it would make sense for all ranks to have the character ban mechanic, teaching newer players how it all works, as well as having more legroom for better team-ups and not just a DPS-based team. "Bans are soft balancing that makes the game tolerable," another Reddit user chimed in.

NetEase themselves seemingly haven’t responded to these complaints just yet, but only time will tell.
