Weapon Range Explained: What is SML?

S, M, and L are Attack Ranges

Notation Range Explanation
S Close range Can only attack in the front line and target the enemy front line
M Mid Range Can only attack in the front line or the rear line and target the enemy front line
L Long range Can attack in either line and attack enemies on either line

In Suikoden, how a character attacks depends on their weapon's range. For example, a close range character has to be in the front line to attack. They can only hit enemies in the front line.

Each Character has Their Own Fixed Range

Suikoden 1 - Formation Screen

Range is determined by a character's weapon. Since a character cannot change what kind of weapon they use, range is fixed for each character.

A character's range is visible on the Formation Screen and in the Weapon Info box on their stats page.

Can You Change or Extend a Character's Range?

You Cannot Change a Character's Range

A weapon's range cannot be changed or extended. This means a character's range cannot be altered.

However, you can use a rune to allow a close range character to target the rear line.

Attacks from runes ignore formations. So a character with a range of S can target the rear line. Of course, it's still recommended to position characters in their proper range.
