You can change your party by talking to Sanchez at your base in Suikoden 1 HD Remaster. Learn how to change your party, how to change your formation, and know how to properly strategize your formation in this guide!

To change your party members, speak to Sanchez at your Headquarters. His quarters are located near the hall.
You may also speak to Mathiu to adjust your party, but talking to him may sometimes unintentionally progress the story, making Sanchez the better option for general use.
Castle Headquarters Guide: Upgrades and List of Facilities
Even if your party is away from the home base, story events may force a change.
To prepare, consider transferring items and equipment to other characters ahead of time, coordinating your actions with the full Suikoden 1 walkthrough.

You can change your party formation at any time outside of combat by selecting Formation from the menu. There you can adjust your characters' positions.
As mentioned above, your party can be forcibly changed by story events. Unfortunately, the game does not always optimize your formation for combat.
Check your party formation before proceeding and make any needed adjustments after your party is modified by the story.

A party doesn’t need exactly six members but should consist of three front liners and three back liners.
Assign roles based on weapon range and each character’s ability to withstand attacks.
| Attack Range | Description |
|---|---|
| Short Range | Can only attack in the front line, and can attack enemy front line |
| Mid Range | Can attack from either the front or back, and can attack the enemy's front line. |
| Long Range | Can attack from either the front or back, and can attack enemies in either the front or back. |
In the game, weapon range determines a character's ability to attack. Characters with close-range weapons must be placed in the front line, as they cannot attack from the back.
Weapon Range Guide: How Does Range Work?
The front line is more likely to be targeted by enemies, so it’s best to place durable characters there with high PROT and HP.
PROT will increase a character's based Defense (DEF) stat, which is boosted further by armor and accessories. High HP will allow a character to survive enemy attacks.
All Character Stats and How to Increase Them
When you change your party, ensure that your more fragile characters, like healers and casters, are safe in the back where they can be protected by tougher allies.
Note that some magic-specialized characters like Luc have a short weapon range, meaning they need to to be in the front row to deliver normal attacks. Balance the risk of exposing fragile characters to damage before putting them on the front line.
