Can Be Equipped at the Rune Shop

Orbs are the unattached form of Runes, and can be equipped at Rune Shops, where the respective Runes within the Orbs will be attached to your characters by a Rune Master. Please note that your characters cannot equip the orb itself, but only the Rune inside it.

There is no significant difference in the services provided by Rune Shops in towns during the first half of the story and the second half of the story.

How to Unequip Orbs

Remove Runes at Rune Shops

Suikoden 1 - Rune Shop

To remove a character's attached Rune, go to a Rune Shop, talk to the Rune Master, and select "Remove". The Rune will be returned in the form of an Orb to the character that equipped it.

Character-Exclusive Runes Cannot Be Removed

Runes like the hero's Soul Eater or Valeria's Falcon Rune cannot be removed because they are exclusive to those characters. Since characters in Suikoden can only equip one rune at a time, characters with their own exclusive runes cannot equip other runes.

Some Runes Cannot Be Removed from Certain Characters

Fukien Resurrection Rune
Hellion Mother Earth Rune

There are certain Runes that cannot be removed once they are equipped to particular characters, even though they are not character-exclusive Runes. Once these characters are equipped with certain Runes, they cannot be equipped with another.

Benefits of Equipping Orbs

Contains Runes for Characters to Use

Orbs contain Runes that give characters the ability to use various magical spells. For example, having a Rune Master attach a Fire Orb to a character gives them a Fire Rune, which allows them to use Fire Magic.
