What Happens When You Die?

You Will Have to Start Over From Your Last Save Point

Suikoden 1 - Continue

When your party gets wiped out, you will have to start over from your last save point. That means you will have to redo anything you had done beforehand, so make sure to save every time you find an inn or a save point.

How to Save

No Death Penalties in Normal Combat

There are no disadvantages when your party gets wiped out other than having to redo anything you did after your last save point.

Characters do not die in normal battles, unlike in Army Battles where certain characters can die permanently if you are not careful.

Level Up Your Entire Party

Suikoden 1 HD Remaster Leveling Up

Grinding and leveling up your characters is a surefire way to greatly reduce the chances of your characters getting wiped out. As you progress through the story, always try to take down all the weaker enemies in a dungeon first before facing off against the boss.

Get Better Armor

Getting better armor is just as important as leveling up your characters. For example, if any of your characters are wearing weak pieces of armor during a boss battle, there's a good chance they will take massive damage and get defeated quickly.

To get better armor, either buy them from armor shops in town or open all the chests in dungeons and other locations you visit.

Run Away if the Fight is Unwinnable

Suikoden 1 - Party Wipe

If you face enemies that can inflict Poison or other status ailments on your characters, or attack in groups of 5 or 6, consider running away from battle. It is recommended to escape a battle especially in the early game where you will have fewer ways to attack large groups of enemies all at the same time.

Focus on fighting weak enemies to have a good chance of defeating them, then gain more EXP to level up and take on stronger enemies.

How to Escape From Battles

Stock Up on Healing Items

Before taking on any dungeon, make sure to stock up on Medicine, Mega Medicine, Dragon Incense, and Sacrificial Buddhas. All these items will help keep your characters healthy and reduce the risk of your entire party getting wiped out.
