Despite being released to multiple platforms along with a dynamic Online Multiplayer Experience, there is no Crossplay feature available for Grand Theft Auto V. Read on and learn more about alternatives to Crossplay including Cross-Gen play!
List of Contents
Unfortunately, Crossplay will not be available for players on any of the platforms that GTA V has released in. This means that Online Multiplayer will be limited in terms of players you can encounter to other players that play on the same console/platform as you do.
As an alternative to Crossplay, players may wish to engage in quasi Cross-Gen play with other players. This method, while it allows players on next-gen platforms to play with other players on older platforms, will not allow next-gen players to take full advantage of their more powerful hardware or any of the enhancements made to the game for the next-gen.
In addition to this, players will not be able to use this method to play with other players on different platforms. This is because "Cross-Gen" is limited only to the same console families that players play on.
Editions Guide: All PS, Xbox, and PC Editions
No. | Step |
---|---|
1 | Download the Original GTA V to your Next-Gen Platform By "Original" copy, this simply means that a player must have on-hand a last-gen copy of the game. For those without these, they will have to purchase a last-gen version of the game to make use of. Currently, only Premium Editions of the game are sold on official storefronts – grabbing any of these will do. Once a copy has been secured, download and install it to your next-gen platform, or in the case of physical copies, simply insert them into your console. |
2 | Play the Last-Gen Copy After managing to install the game on your platform, all that is left to do now is to simply play the game. Since players are using a last-gen copy of the game, which are backwards compatible with next-gen consoles, players will be able to connect and play with friends or other players who are playing on last-gen consoles. |
Last-gen player who are "upgrading" to the current-gen version of the game need not spend hours to achieve the same kind of progression they have had in their previous Online play experience. Characters originally created and grown in last-gen copies of the game can be safely migrated to next-gen versions of the game through the Rockstar Social Club.
Players who have migrated their accounts will now "technically" own two versions of the same character, each with their own different progression. Migrating a character from the PS4 to PS5 and then progressing the character on the PS5, for example, will result in the PS4 version of the character having less progression compared to that of the PS5 version.
