Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) - How to Level Up Skills
Each playable character in Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) has seven skills in common and one unique special skill. Learn how to level up these skills by using them often, completing certain challenges, and meeting other specific criteria.

How to Level Up Skills

Normal Skills

Stamina

Level up your character's Stamina by running, swimming, cycling, and participating in Triathlons.

Shooting

Shooting is increased by landing shots and headshots as well as completing Shooting Range challenges for Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals.

Strength

Land punches to increase your Strength. You can also play sports like golf, darts, and tennis to increase your Strength.

Stealth

Walk around in Stealth mode and commit Stealth attacks to improve this stat.

Flying

Fly under control for extended periods and complete Flight School challenges to improve the Flying stat.

Driving

Increase the driving skill by holding wheelies and landing all four tires from big jumps. Performing Stunt Jumps also increases the Driving stat.

Lung Capacity

Spend time underwater to level up Lung Capacity.

Special Skills

Increasing each character's Special Skill will improve its duration. Each Skill has different requirements in order to level up.

Invulnerability (Trevor)

Any of the following will level up Trevor's Special Skill:

  • Fail missions
  • Fall over
  • Take damage
  • Get hit by a vehicle
  • Bump into pedestrians
  • Get headshots
  • Maintain high speed in a vehicle
  • Blowing up pedestrians

Area Kill (Michael)

Any of the following will level up Michael's Special Skill:

  • Get headshots
  • Perform Stealth attacks and Stealth kills
  • Maintain high speed in a vehicle
  • Lose health to critical levels

Improved Driving Handling (Franklin)

Any of the following will level up Franklin's Special Skill:

  • Nearly miss other vehicles while driving
  • Drive continuously
  • Drive into oncoming traffic
  • Drive near a vehicle's top speed

List of Skills

Normal Skills

Skill Effects
Stamina How long you can run, swim, or cycle at full speed before losing health.
Shooting Your skill in handling various firearms. Dampens recoil, reduces reload time, and increases capacity.
Strength Physical power and resilience. Boosts melee damage, speeds up ladder climbing, improves sports ability, and decreases damage taken from various sources.
Stealth Your skill at remaining undetected. Move more quickly and quietly in Stealth mode.
Flying Your skill in the cockpit of any flying craft.
Driving Your skill behind the wheel or handlebar. Pop wheelies more easily and maintain more control while airborne.
Lung Capacity How long you can hold your breath underwater.

Special Skills

Skill Effects
Invulnerability (Trevor) Trevor flies into a rage, allowing him to take and dish out incredible amounts of damage. He can soak up damage from bullets, explosions, and pretty much anything else that comes his way. This Special Skill is best used when surrounded by enemies but cannot be activated while Trevor is in a vehicle.
Area Kill (Michael) This Special Skill allows Michael to slow down time Matrix-style, giving him the advantage of being able to pull off perfect headshots in any shootout.
Improved Driving Handling (Franklin) Franklin's Special Skill slows down traffic while he's controlling a vehicle. Use this to take turns at max speed or narrowly avoid smashing into other vehicles.
