Grand Theft Auto Online (GTA Online) comes bundled with every purchase of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V). However, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions can be bought standalone, with the former being free for a limited time. Read on to learn more about getting GTA Online for free!

Is GTA Online Free?

Free With Most Versions of GTA V

If you purchase the standard version of Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online will be automatically included for free along with the base game.

Note that a Story Mode Only version of the game is available for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only which does not include GTA Online. Players can also purchase GTA Online separately for these consoles without purchasing the base game.

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) - Is GTA Online Free
For three months starting March 15, 2022, PS5 owners with a PlayStation Plus subscription can download GTA Online for free and keep it. Players who redeem the game without a subscription will be offered a 7-day PlayStation Plus free trial to be able to play it.

Xbox Series X|S Discounts

Unfortunately, Xbox Series X|S owners are not offered GTA Online for free. However, Rockstar is giving a 50% discount for the standalone GTA Online until June 14, 2022. Note that this also requires an active Xbox subscription to play.

Like with most games on PlayStation and Xbox, an online subscription is required for multiplayer. Besides free trials for PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, there have been past promotions that allow free online play for a few days, so keep an eye out for those!
