Ground-type Moves in Competitive Play

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Ground-type Moves in Competitive Play

Ground-type moves are mainly used as coverage moves. They are effective against the most common offensive Pokemon, which are Fire and Electric-types.

These moves also work well against defense-oriented teams that use Rock and Steel-types.

Ground and Rock-type Moves Have Great Synergy

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Onix

Ground and Rock-type moves are commonly a thematic pairing that also works well in battles.

Ground-type Pokemon cannot hit Flying-type Pokemon but can deal super-effective damage with a variety of Rock-type moves.

Meanwhile, Rock-type moves are not effective on Steel-types, but they are vulnerable to Ground-type moves!

Earthquake as a Staple in Doubles

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Earthquake in Doubles

Numerous offensive Pokemon in the Doubles format are equipped with Earthquake as a way to deal with their counters.

This move hits multiple targets, so Earthquake users are usually paired with Flying-type Pokemon or those with the Levitate or Telepathy Ability.

In doing so, they are able to deal damage to both their opoonents' Pokemon without putting their own ally in trouble.

How to Build a Doubles Team

Ground-type Dynamax Moves

Pokemon Sword and Shield - Max Quake

Using Max Quake in battle raises the Special Defense of your Pokemon in the field, which helps specially-defensive Pokemon to become even more durable.

This boost in Special Defense alleviates Ground-type Pokemon's vulnerability to special Water or Grass-type moves, such as Hydro Pump or Solar Beam.
