Players are free to skip the first Soul Hackers game and still enjoy Soul Hackers 2, as there are no major plot points carried over from the first title.
However, longtime Soul Hackers 1 and Shin Megami Tensei fans will be able to spot multiple nods and references in Soul Hackers 2, which can add to the overall enjoyment of the game.
Soul Hackers 1 protagonist Nemissa makes an appearance as a DLC Demon.
One of the more direct nods to the first Soul Hackers game would be the appearance of Victor, as well as the bonus DLCs, with outfits from the previous game and having Nemissa as an exclusive Demon.

The first Soul Hackers game called Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers was released on November 13, 1997 on the Sega Saturn. The game was a first-person dungeon crawler set in a cyberpunk Japan, where virtual reality is at the forefront of society.
The game would later be ported to the Nintendo 3DS many years later, and is widely recognized as one of the more unique titles from the Shin Megami Tensei and Devil Summoner series.
