4. Select the tournament to join.
Joining an online tournament is pretty simple. After turning on Smash Ultimate go into Online, select Online Tourney, and join.
It is possible to play with up to 64 players in a tournament, but the rules of the tournament change depending on the event. To check on ongoing tournament rulesets, go to the News section on the right of the main menu. Select the event, and the rules will be listed below.
Many players participate in unofficial online tournaments with varying rulesets. These tournaments are organized through online platforms such as Twitter or smash.gg.
Whether it's smash.gg, Twitter, or another platform, simply find the tournament you want to participate in, hit the register button, and enter in any necessary information. Be aware that tournament coditions may vary. Some unofficial tournaments will follow certain guidelines, such as requiring a LAN cable to ensure less lag or banning certain characters and stages.

Depends on who it is you struggle against. I'd say generally someone like Wolf or Palu is a good secondary for any character. Byleth's largest drawback is mobility and frame data, so a character with faster options and movement is your best bet.
