List of Contents
In World of Light, you can unlock characters by defeating them in battle. They're marked by a special icon enclosed in wings. To learn more about unlocking characters and where to find them, refer to our guide down below!
World of Light Character Locations
Defeating characters in the World of Light unlocks them for use in future battles. You have to beat the actual character, not a spirit that uses that character as a stand in. Actual characters are marked in a pawn icon enclosed in wings.
How to Unlock Characters Fast: Character Unlock Order

You can level up your spirits by going into the World of Light menu, selecting 'Manage Spirits', then selecting 'Level Up'. This will cost either Snacks or a Core, and will increase their Power.
World of Light also has a skill tree where each node gives you various buffs. You can use Skill Spheres to unlock nodes in the skill tree and get their corresponding buffs.
Some matches have gimmicks, and then some spirits have effects that can counteract those gimmicks or help you in general. If you find that a match is too hard, try finding spirits whose effects are more helpful to your specific situation.
If you find yourself barred by a spirit you can't beat, you can always go another route. Maybe you'll find a spirit that counteracts the stage's effect, or maybe you'll strengthen your current spirits enough to even the playing field.
If you find the game too hard you can always lower the difficulty to make things easier.
World of Light is a single player RPG mode with separate stats and equippable spirits that give you various buffs that will help you in unique battles all across the World of Light. There is an overworld with different spirits, fighters and dungeons to clear, alongside boss fights and unique match conditions.
Spirits are characters from other games that give you a unique buff with their own separate stats. They either boost physical abilities or provide special skills.
Kirby is the first character you can use in World of Light. As seen in the trailer, he's the only one to survive Galeem's light rays. You will unlock more characters as you play the mode.
