Messmer is a main boss for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. This is confirmed as we see him fight the tarnished in the trailer.
Furthermore, Messmer seems to antagonize the Tarnished, questioning his mother, Queen Marika, on why she approved the lordship of one lacking grace.
Messmer is one of the Demigods born of Queen Marika's blood. This would mean that Messmer wields otherworldly strength and could potentially be a challenge for the tarnished.
Messmer is not specifically mentioned in the base game, but there are instances when he was alluded to.
The Nascent, Aeonian, and Smoldering butterflies may represent Miquella, Malenia, and Messmer along with their curses respectively.
The ghost in the Church of Pilgrimage near the Imapler's Catacombs also speaks of a soulless demigod that is Marika's unwanted child, perhaps alluding to Messmer and his banishment in the land of shadow.
