Yeah equipments can be upgraded. And it seems that the characters still dont have innate abilities outside their limitbreaks. It seems that the abilities are also in mside the weappn so you might only be able to use braver when equipping the buster sword and such. ( braver with buster sword is just an example).

>>181 It seems there's a new point called SP to upgrade the equipments themselves. AP still exists for the materia. Now this is just personal onservation but I checked some sites and saw a weapon menu screen. I saw there the materia slot and its linked to the other slot so I guess we still have materia linking.
