Do you recommend defeating the Optional Bosses?

I'm looking for a new game to play and just came across final fantasy 7. I watched the trailers and all but I've been hearing negative things about the game. Should I still play this?

I just played the demo.. looks promising. but I'm afraid I'll be disappointed with the story because other people say it's not how it used to be.
