Learn how to play the Treasure Hunt minigame with villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) with this guide.
To play Treasure Hunt, a villager will hide a present in the ground. Once the timer starts, look around the island and dig up holes for treasure. Bring the present back to villager to complete the game!

You can play Treasure Hunt with any villager on your island that you're good friends with.
If they have a thought bubble over their head, they may ask you to play Treasure Hunt with them!
How to Raise Friendship | Activities with Villagers
The villager will hide the buried treasure somewhere in the island. Dig up holes around your island to look for the buried treasure within the given time.
Do it within the time limit, and you'll win the treasure!
If you have access to the upper levels (cliffs) with a ladder or incline, make sure you check those as well!
The game is not over yet! Once you get the treasure, the timer stops. You cannot open or drop the item, so return it to the villager.
They will open up the treasure for you and you will receive it as a prize!
If you found the item past the time limit, you should still be able to return it to the villager.
They'll still open the treasure in front of you, but they just won't give it you. Woah, harsh much?
However, some players have found that they could return it to the villager. To fix this, wait for the next day, and it will turn into a lost item.
Though there's not much you can do with it now, but you can sell it at Nook's Cranny or keep it as a decoration!
If you have an item that says “What was this again" you can throw it away in a trash can. You can do this with any item.
