Tier List Placement

SSBU Steve Icon S Tier Tier

A unique fighter with a mining based moveset

Steve's moveset revolves around mining for dirt, wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond and redstone, which can increase the power of his other moves. His rapid jab allows him to swing his sword while moving, allowing for very easy combos. He has several moves for getting openings on opponents, such as up tile, side special, forward throw, as well as powerful KO options like down air, TNT, and side special. His blocks are also vital to his recovery, but can also help him control the stage and even edgeguard opponents if used properly.

Steve has very poor mobility, both on the ground and in the air. His jump height is also among the lowest of all characters, and he generally has poor range on most attacks. This, combined with lots of end lag on many moves put him in a weird spot where he is somewhat disadvantaged by most speedy characters who can outrange him.

See Our Tier List Here!

Steve Movesets

Steve's Fighter Ability

Unique crafting mechanic

steve jump

Unlike other characters, steve's initial jump is quite low, so low in fact that he can't even reach the first platform in a battlefield stage. To compensate for your low jump, you can craft blocks by using neutral special in the air to make your own platform or use a double jump.

Whle on the ground, Steve can also use his neutral special to mine for materials which, in addition to blocks, can be used to craft more powerful versions of his weapons.

Can attack while moving

attack while moving

Steve can perform his jab and F Tilt while moving. At low percents, this can be used to unleash several attacks against the enemies in a row, since you can chase them while attacking.

Normal Attacks

Jab / Forward Tilt

Similar to Mega Man's Mega Buster, Steve's jab and forward tilt are the same attack, with the exception that forward tilt allows him to move forward while using it. It can be strung into a combo with itself, and his aerials, and extended via blocks.

Dash Attack

Steve Dash Attack

Steve's dash attack uses a pickaxe and has a long lasting hitbox. Beware though as it has a long end lag so avoid using it against shielding enemies or you'll get punished easily.

Up Tilt

Up Tilt

Steve's up tilt is an axe attack. It has a low knockback which makes it a great combo tool, and can be extended via his blocks.

Down Tilt

flint

Steve can generate fire using his down tilt. The flame lasts a while and can even fall off the stage if used there. It's an excellent tool to use against enemies that are trying to recover.

Aerials

Forward Air

pickaxe spike

Steve's forward air is a pickaxe attack and can be used to spike enemies off stage. It can be used in coordination with his blocks to predict the enemy fighter's movement for a spike kill.

Back Air

back air pickaxe

Steve's back air is a great kill option to use as it has high knockback.

Down Air

anvil

Steve's down air allows him to drop an anvil downwards. Don't forget to mine, as it costs one iron to use. The move itself is very powerful, and is a good KO option.

Smash Attacks

Up Smash

lavablock

Steve's Up Smash allows him to summon a lava block on top of him. It has high damage and it can also hit enemies in front of you, making it a decent out of shield option. Beware as the move cannot be canceled, so if you miss your smash attack, you are extremely vulnerable to attacks.

Forward Smash

Fsmash sword

Steve's forward smash makes him swing a sword horizontally. If you're using a diamond, it can kill enemies as early as around 80% against light to mid-weight enemies.

Down Smash

lava

Steve's Down Smash makes him spill a bucket of Lava in front and behind him. It has a big hitbox and is pretty quick so it's a great tool to use against enemies that roll a lot.

Specials

Neutral Special (Mine / Craft / Create Block)

Steve has three neutral specials, depending on where he uses the move. When on the ground, he will mine for crafting materials, and when near the crafting table, those materials can be used for crafting weapons. When in the air, Steve will create a block, which is useful for him to recover, since his jump is so poor.

Steve's crafting mechanics are explained in detail in the section below.

Side Special (Minecart)

Steve can ride a minecart by using side B, which can be used in mid-air for horizontal recovery. It has a great knockback power, so it's a great tool to use for approaching enemies and even damaging enemies too. It consumes Iron and Wood so be wary of your inventory.

Since it is a command grab, the minecart will also carry enemies hit when you abandon the minecart which makes them vulnerable to follow up attacks.

Up Special (Elytra)

Elytra

Elytra is Steve's main recovery tool. It deals damage at the start of his flight, but it can be intercepted mid-flight, so be careful when using this move. Flying steeply will greatly decrease your acceleration but flying horizontally can extend it (similar to a glider).

Down B (TNT)

TNT is one of Steve's best edge guarding tool against enemies. It's an excellent technique to use against enemies that are trying to recover as it severely limits their options.

It can be hit to make it explode quicker, or you can detonate it yourself by using a Redstone circuit, then stepping on the pressure plate. Those who step on the Pressure Plate won't get knocked back as far as the others so placing the plate near the TNT can be a valuable tactic.

It can also easily be ignited by fire-based attacks.

Grab / Throws

Grab

fishing pole

Steve's grab has an extended range using a fishing pole. Once an enemy is grabbed, you can proceed with the normal inputs to proceed with a throw.

Up Throw

up throw steve

Up throw uses a piston to hit enemies. It can deal high damage and kill enemies with high percents.

Forward Throw

fthrow steve

Steve's forward throw launches enemies forward. Steve has excellent edge guarding tools, so sending enemies offstage is a great option, and forward allows him to do that. If enemies don't die from Steve's up throw, going for a forward throw is another good option.

Down Throw (Iron)

downthrow steve

Steve's down throw summons an iron anvil to hit the enemies. It can be a great combo starter, but make sure to check your inventory first if an iron is available.

Back Throw

back throw

Steve's back throw launches the enemy diagonally. Steve's other throws have better effects, but if back throw can send your enemy offstage, then it's still a great throw to use in certain situations.

Final Smash

final smash steve

Steve's final smash makes him summon a huge piston that launches the enemy away. The enemy that is hit will be thrown in a creeper's house, and take massive damage and knockback.

How to Mine Materials and Use the Crafting Table as Steve

Mining materials

Steve mining

Steve can mine materials by pressing B while on the ground. The materials you can get range from rare materials like a diamond, to low-quality ones like wood. All of the items he gets can be used, so there is no need to fret about not getting rare materials quickly.

Materials depend on the mining area

material

The materials he gets vary on the area he is currently mining at. Rocky areas will generate more stones, while metallic ground will generate more iron.

Mining material order is fixed

Steve mining order

The items you get have a fixed order. You will need to mine for a long time to get diamonds, so keep on mining whenever you have a space moment.

Some moves consume materials

Down throw's anvil costs 1 Iron.

Some of Steve's moves require materials in order to be used. The minecart will require iron, and if you lack the materials, it cannot be used. Always watch your inventory and use your moves accordingly.

Mmaterials can be checked above Steve/Alex's portrait

alex inventory

The inventory can be checked by looking at the gauge just above Steve's portrait. The items are arranged by rarity, with the lowest quality ones on the left side and the rarer ones on the right. Diamonds and Gold do not appear inside the gauge and instead, will appear as special icons just beside it.

Craft Items at the Crafting Table

crafting table

By pressing B at the crafting table as Steve, you'll be able to craft your all of your weapons from materials you have obtained from mining.

Your rarest material will be used

rarity

Wood → Stone → Iron → Gold → Diamond

The rarest material is used when crafting your weapon. The order of rarity goes with (staring with the cheapest materials) Diamond → Gold → Iron → Stone→ Wood

Press B while shielding to summon the Crafting Table

summon table

Pressing B while shielding will summon the Crafting Table to your side. This makes trying to keep Steve away from its position useless. It's also a great option to use if you want to save time by not walking to your table while fighting.

Press B in the air to create blocks

blocks

Pressing B while in the air will make Steve create a block just beneath him. It's a pretty versatile technique and is a core feature of Steve's gameplay. Since Steve's jump is so poor, blocks will be used to help him recover, and they can even set up an edgeguard.

Cheapest materials are used first

The material used for blocks will be the one with the lowest quality among his items. Don't fret about all your irons getting used up, but do watch out if you wish to save up on wood and stone for some of your moves.

### You can't place them too far away

map restriction for blocks highlight

The blocks can't just be placed anywhere. There's a certain limit on where you can place them, which is represented by a pink pigment at the side of the block.
