Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Coalossal Battling
Stats are important in deciding the outcome of every Pokemon battle in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV). Read on to learn about all Pokemon stats such as HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, and how to maximize each of them for Gen 9 competitive play!

What Are Stats?

The Main Factors That Determine How A Pokemon Performs

Stats directly influence how a Pokemon performs in battle. How strong its attacks are, how well it takes damage, when it gets to use a move, and so on.

The six primary stats are: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed.

Types of Stats

List of Stats
Stat Meaning
HP HP or Hit Points show numerically how healthy a Pokemon is. This indicates how much damage a Pokemon can take before it reaches zero and is knocked out or faints.
Attack A Pokemon's Attack stat determines how much damage its Physical Attacks will deal.
Defense Defense determines how well a Pokemon takes damage from a Physical Attack.
Special Attack A Pokemon's Special Attack stat determines how much damage its Special Attacks will deal.
Special Defense Special Defense determines how well a Pokemon takes damage from a Special Attack.
Speed Speed decides which Pokemon goes first in a battle. The Pokemon with the highest Speed stat will get to move first, and turns are ordered by Speed from fastest to slowest Pokemon.
Accuracy and Evasion These are stats that are not readily visible in battle, but determine the likelihood of a move hitting.
PP PP or Power Points show numerically how many times a Pokemon can use a move. If no points remain for all of a Pokemon's moves, it will use the move, Struggle.

Physical VS Special

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Talonflame Using Flame Charge

Talonflame is using Flame Charge, a damaging Physical move.

In Pokemon battles, moves that deal Physical damage involve one Pokemon making contact with another Pokemon, or something tangible making contact with the other Pokemon.

There are physical contact moves such as Tackle, Scratch, or Bite, and there are non-contact Physical Moves such as Rock Slide and Earthquake.

Special Moves on the other hand, deal with intangible forces. Moves like Water Gun, Ember, or Thundershock do not make contact with the opponent whatsoever, and deal Special damage.

Status Moves

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Pawmi Using Charge

Pawmi is using Charge, a status move that raises its Special Defense and boosts its next Electric-type move.

Besides Physical and Special Moves, there is a third classification for moves: Status.

Status moves are neither Physical or Special, and Pokemon who use them inflict changes to stats on themselves or other Pokemon. Examples of Status Moves include Leer, Growl, and Charge.

Stat Modification

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Azumarill Using Belly Drum

Azumarill is using Belly Drum, a status move that maximizes its Attack stat to +6.

During battles, a Pokemon's stats can be boosted or reduced. There are many ways for a Pokemon's stats to be modified, through moves, through an item or with Abilities.
These factors increase or decrease stats in stages, with each stage having a different multiplier.

Without modifications, Pokemon's stats start at 0. Switching a Pokemon out of the active spot resets Stat Modifications.

How To Increase A Pokemon's Stats

Breed For The Right Nature

Breeding for the best Nature for your Pokemon will greatly boost its potential when it is battle-ready. Choosing what Nature your Pokemon should have depends on what role the Pokemon will fulfill in your team.

A Physical Attacker for instance, will benefit from an Attack boosting Nature such as Adamant or Brave, while a Special Attacker will benefit from a Special Attack boosting Nature like Modest or Quiet.

Getting Good IVs

Good stats literally start as soon as a Pokemon is born, with its IVs or Individual Values being assigned randomly. Stats can be passed on to a Pokemon's offspring through selective breeding.

Hyper Training is a feature introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon, where a Level 100 Pokemon can maximize the IVs on its stats.

Training Your Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Sprigatito with Moves VS Wild Lechonk
A Pokemon will have to undergo dedicated training to improve its stats. Wild Pokemon typically yield a number of Effort Values that a Pokemon can gain after knocking it out. A Pokemon can have a maximum of 508 EVs that you can distribute to different stats, with a individual stat maxing out at 252 each.

Vitamins are a way to level up your Pokemon in minimal time. Each vitamin raises one stat of a Pokemon by 10 points. Since Pokemon Sword and Shield, Players can give a maximum of 26 vitamins to maximize a stat up to 252.

Note that EVs gained from wild Pokemon and those obtained from Vitamins stack.

Vitamin Effect
HP Up Raises the HP of a Pokemon.
Protein Raises the Attack of a Pokemon.
Iron Raises the Defense of a Pokemon.
Calcium Raises the Special Attack of a Pokemon.
Zinc Raises the Special Defense of a Pokemon.
Carbos Raises the Speed of a Pokemon.

they max at 508 points with each stat only being able to have a max of 252 points, for example if a Pokémon has 252 EVs in sp.attack and speed it can only gain 8 more EVs in any stat except sp attack and speed before it reaches its max EVs

Do the vitamin and wild poke points stack? 252 from each per stat? 252 per but total ?
