How to Rematch Gym Leaders

Get the National Dex after Becoming Champion

BDSP - Gym Leader Rematches.png

You can rematch all the Gym Leaders once you obtain the National Dex after becoming champion. After exiting Prof. Rowan's lab, Roark will will pop up and tell you about the rematches. You can battle the Gym Leaders at any order, and you do not need to battle the trainers in the gym.

How to Unlock the National Dex

Getting the National Dex before Becoming Champion

If you complete the National Dex before becoming champion, you first need to enter and exit Prof. Rowan's lab to trigger the interaction between you and Roark once you have become champion. You will not be able to rematch the Gym Leaders until you have had the interaction.

Rematch Gym Leaders Once Per Day

You can challenge all Gym Leaders for a rematch once per day. After defeating them, you need to wait for the day to pass to challenge them again.

Take note that you can battle all of the Gym Leaders in a single day, in case you want to raise the level of some of your Pokemon!

Tips to Beat Roark's Rematch Team

Key Strategies for the Roark Rematch
✓ Quickly defeat Tyranitar with Fighting-type moves.
✓ Use super effective moves on Aerodactyl and Armaldo.
✓ Watch out for Probopass' Focus Sash.
➤ Chip at its health before taking it out completely.
✓ Relicanth is locked to one move, so bring out a Pokemon that can resist it.
✓ Drapion's only weakness is Ground-type moves.

Since Roark is the first Gym Leader of the region, his rematch team is significantly stronger than your last battle with him. However, his rematch team is especially weak to Fighting-type moves, so it is best to have one on your team when facing him the second time.

Make sure to watch out for his Armaldo and Probopass as they carry moves that are not typical for Rock-type Pokemon such as X-Scissor for Grass-types and Discharge for Water-types.

Tips to Beat Gardenia's Rematch Team

Key Strategies for the Gardenia Rematch
✓ Take advantage of Sunny Day by using Fire-type moves.
✓ Watch out for Torterra's Stone Edge and Earthquake.
✓ Inflict a status condition on Breloom to disable the Toxic Orb.
✓ Chip at Cherrim's health before taking it out completely to not activate the Focus Sash.
✓ Roserade can use the Power Herb to use Solar Beam in a single turn without sunny weather.

Gardenia's team is especially weak to Fire and Flying-type moves, and is easy to take out with a handful of Pokemon of either of these two types. The Sunny Day strategy that Gardenia uses often fails on her since it also powers up any Fire type moves you use.

The only real threat is her Torterra and Breloom since Torterra can one shot a dual type like Charizard with a single Stone Edge. Meanwhile, Breloom can slowly whittle down your health with Leech Seed, while keeping up its own health with Toxic Orb and Poison Heal.

Tips to Beat Maylene's Rematch Team

Key Strategies for the Maylene Rematch
✓ Use special moves against Hitmontop to counter its Intimidate.
✓ Set up Reflect to withstand physical attacks.
✓ Lower the Attack of Maylene's Pokemon with Intimidate.
✓ Quickly defeat Heracross with Flying type moves before the Flame Orb activates.
✓ Anticipate Medicham's moves and switch out to a Pokemon that resists it.
✓ Chip at Lucario's health before taking it out completely to not activate the Focus Sash.

Though Gardenia's team is especially weak against Flying-type Pokemon, most of her team will have strong Rock or Electric-type coverage moves to deal with them. If you decide to bring Flying-type Pokemon into battle, make sure they have high enough Speed to quickly take her Pokemon down.

A Ground-type Pokemon is also a great choice to bring to the rematch since it can help deal with Pokemon like Medicham, Infernape, and Lucario.

Tips to Beat Crasher Wake's Rematch Team

✓ Watch out for Ice-type coverage moves when using Grass-types.
✓ Watch out for Gyarados' Earthquake.
✓ Use Fairy-type moves against Kingdra.
✓ Quickly defeat Ludicolo with a super-effective move from a fast Pokemon.

To defeat Crasher Wake, it is best to stick with Electric type Pokemon since most of his team will have Ice-type coverage moves to use against Grass-types. However, you can also use a Grass-type Pokemon that cancels out its Ice-type weakness, such as Abomasnow.

Gyarados is the Pokemon to look out for since it has the move Earthquake which can take out any Electric-type in one hit. It also has a Wacan Berry which allows it to resist a single Electric-type move.

Tips to Beat Fantina's Rematch Team

Key Strategies for the Crasher Wake Rematch
✓ Take advantage of Drifblim's Flame Orb by using the move Hex.
✓ Use Heat Rotom against Dusknoir.
✓ Switch to a low speed Pokemon against Banette.
✓ Use a Fire-type Pokemon against Mismagius and Froslass.
➤ Chip at Froslass' health before taking it out to not activate the Focus Sash.
✓ Quickly defeat Gengar or Use a Poison-type Pokemon.

Though Fantina is a Ghost type Gym Leader, Fire-type Pokemon are actually a great counter against her team as they are immune to the move Will-O-Wisp and resist many of Mismagius' and Froslass' moves. However, it is still best to get Fire-types that have Dark or Ghost-type moves to inflict super-effective damage.

A Pokemon with the Levitate Ability is also great for dealing with Dusknoir, and a Poison-type is also a good idea in case you are struggling with Gengar.

✓ Watch Out for Steelix's Earthquake.
✓ Send out a Pokemon that resists Empoleon's moves.
✓ Use Magnezone's other weaknesses aside from Ground.
✓ Beat Bastiodon with Fighting or Ground-type moves.

Byron can easily be beaten with a good Fighting and Fire-type Pokemon combo like Lucario and Charizard. It is also important to bring a Pokemon that is immune or resistant to Ground-type moves to deal with Steelix's Earthquake.

We also recommend bringing a Pokemon that is heavily resistant to Rock-type moves to deal with Aggron and to take minimal damage from Stealth Rock each time it is switched in.

✓ Watch out for Snow Warning and Blizzard.
✓ Use 4x super effective Fire-type moves on Abomasnow.
✓ Defeat Mamoswine with Water or Fighting type moves.
✓ Fire-type moves to more damage to Jynx due to Dry Skin.
✓ Beat Glaceon with special moves to work around Baby-Doll Eyes.
✓ Use 4x super effective Fighting-type moves on Weavile.

You can defeat Candice with a similar team you used for Byron since both of their Pokemon are weak to Fire and Fighting-type moves. However, it is also best to bring a Water or Fighting-type Pokemon that can deal with Mamoswine without taking any super-effective damage.

It is also important to watch out for Abomasnow's Snow Warning, which causes a hailstorm when it enters the field, and Blizzard, which is a powerful Ice type move that always hits in hail.

Tips to Beat Volkner's Rematch Team

✓ Use Electric-type moves on Pelipper.
➤ Use weather changing moves or abilities to get rid of the rain.
✓ Switch to Gastrodon while Raichu is locked on to Surf.
✓ Luxray holds a Focus Sash and has Intimidate.
✓ Use a Pokemon immune to Earthquake for Electivire.

Though Ground-type Pokemon are the obvious choice to use against the Electric-type Gym Leader, keep in mind that Volkner's Pokemon have Water and Ice-type coverage moves to use against Ground-type Pokemon.

A great counter for this is to use Gastrodon since it cancels out those weaknesses with its Water typing. If you have a Gastrodon with the ability Storm Drain, you can also use Volker's Water type moves against him by increasing the Special Attack of your Pokemon.

For Gardenia's rematch team, I strongly recommend adding Crobat as a recommended Pokémon. It outspeeds Jumpluff with its 130 speed BST (Jumpluff has 110) and learns Taunt by TM. Taunt prevents all of Gardenia's utility moves, shutting down her Jumpluff, Breloom, Cherrim, and Roserade. Sunflora is useless since you prevent Sunny Day. Crobat also resists every attack move these 5 Pokémon have access to, usually with 4x resist! Bring something to switch into Torterra's Stone Edge and you're done.
