Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Overview

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition (also known simply as XCX:DE) is an enhanced re-release of Monolith Soft’s 2015 sci-fi RPG, originally developed for the Wii U. Scheduled for release on March 20, 2025 for the Nintendo Switch, this version includes updated visuals and additional story content, similar to what Monolith Soft did for the Definitive Edition of the first Xenoblade Chronicles game.

The game is set in 2054 after humanity’s escape from Earth during an interstellar conflict. Players take on the role of a customizable protagonist, a survivor on the alien world of Mira, where they join the New Los Angeles (NLA) colony. Their mission: explore Mira’s expansive open world, comprising five continents filled with diverse biomes and towering creatures, and aid in establishing a new home for humanity. Alongside this, however, they uncover mysteries about the planet and its hostile inhabitants.

Players can customize their character’s appearance, class, and abilities while engaging in real-time battles across large open environments. However, large, pilotable mechs, called Skells, make combat and traversal easier. Moreover, the game also supports multiplayer modes, including cooperative missions and Global Nemesis battles.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Gameplay

As XCX:DE’s Mira is a vast open world, players can freely traverse its five distinct continents, either on foot or in Skells—customizable mechs that enhance both exploration and combat with added verticality and mobility.

In combat, players can use cooldown-based abilities and positioning tactics to defeat enemies, and they can switch between a variety of weapon types and combat roles. Teamwork is also emphasized, as players can form parties with both story characters and other player avatars in online multiplayer. There are also progression systems that include character customization, class selection, and mech upgrades.

Aside from the main story quest, players are also treated to numerous side missions and affinity quests that deepen friendships with comrades.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Characters

Player Character

Image

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition’s player character is a customizable avatar who embodies the player’s choices and actions within the game. Often referred to as "Rook"—short for "Rookie"— by other characters, they are a survivor of the White Whale crash on the alien planet Mira. With no recollection of their past life on Earth, they join the organization BLADE to protect humanity’s future on the hostile new world.

Elma

Image

Elma is the cool-headed and fiercely capable leader of the Reclaimers Division. Previously known for leading the "Skelleton Crew" in training Earth’s heaviest combat units, Elma is every bit the disciplined powerhouse: she’s a Full Metal Jaguar, deftly dual-wielding swords and guns with unyielding precision. And while she’s all business on the surface, Elma’s steel-willed commitment to humanity’s survival might just make her one of the most layered characters in the game.

Lin Lee Koo

Image

Lin Lee Koo packs an impressive punch despite her age. As the resident engineer of BLADE’s Outfitters Division, Lin is all about creating and upgrading Skells. She joins up with Elma and the player character early on and quickly proves her mettle with both her Shield Trooper class combat skills and her knack for tech. She often finds herself at odds with Tatsu, a supporting Nopon character who assists the main cast on their journey.

Lao Huang

Image

Lao Huang is the kind of battle-scarred soldier who’s seen it all yet still charges forward with conviction. Once a comrade-in-arms with Doug—another playable character—back in their U.S. Army days, Lao is now the leader of the Pathfinder Team Belisarda. Wielding both a javelin and sniper rifle as a Partisan Eagle, Lao strikes from afar and closes in for the kill with precision. His bond with Lin goes deeper than most, born from shared traumas and unspoken understandings.

Judging by the brief snippet showcased in the Definitive Edition's trailer, Lao is poised to have a more significant role in the new story content of the game.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Reviews

The Wii U’s Crown Jewel

Image

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has yet to be released, but its original Wii U release was generally well-received, earning an 84 out of 100 on Metacritic. Nintendo Life awarded the Wii U game a near-perfect 9 out of 10, praising its impressive use of the Wii U’s hardware and vast, engaging world. The only criticisms were occasional difficulty spikes and the presence of some fetch quests.

IGN also gave the game a high score of 8.2 out of 10, acknowledging the sheer amount of content and the expansive world. However, they noted that the presentation could sometimes feel stiff and awkward. This issue, however, may be addressed in the Definitive Edition.

Xenoblade Chronicles X currently holds a user score of 8.7 out of 10 on Metacritic. While many players praised the game’s immersive world, memorable music, and deep content, others found its systems overly complex with little explanation.
