Wangyue Gameplay
Combat
Wangyue is an open-world action game comparable to gacha titles such as Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves. However, unlike the aforementioned games, tWangyue limits parties to three characters, as suggested by available gameplay footage. Combat in the game is fast paced and allows players to chain together combos using basic attacks, skills, and character swaps among two other party members.
A significant mechanic involves "breaking" enemies, indicated by a separate bar beneath their health that fills as players deal damage. When the bar is full, a glass-breaking animation triggers, likely stunning the enemy and increasing the damage they take for a limited period. Players can also unleash ultimate abilities, which serve to either deliver massive damage to enemies or provide support to allies.
The game includes a double jump, which is useful for dodging and countering attacks and initiating aerial combos. Players can also perform dive attacks from mid-air, allowing them to plunge toward the ground and strike enemies with their weapons.
Exploration in an Hourglass-Shaped World
Exploration unfolds within an hourglass-shaped world, where two distinct environments coexist: a realm filled with mountains, trees and other natural landscapes, and a modern city suspended high in the sky. Both settings are populated with quests, including main story missions that progress the narrative and side quests that reward players with additional lore and resources.
Players can perform actions like dashing and jumping, which consume stamina. They can also leap between buildings and even glide between them using a glider. However, gliding continuously drains stamina.
Moreover, cities are populated with NPCs, but these areas can also shift into combat zones. Enemies may appear within the city, causing civilians to flee while city guards intervene to aid the player in battle.
Interacting with the Environment
Interactive elements abound, with certain structures like pipelines allowing players to ascend quickly to rooftops. These areas often host enemies, and players can use these elements to execute sneak attacks to instantly eliminate them.
Unlike existing gacha games, Wangyue allows players to interact with the environment by moving and stacking objects, which can be used to access high places. The game even allows players to drive vehicles around the city as an alternative means of exploration. Similar to mechanics found in games like Grand Theft Auto, players can crash these vehicles into objects and other cars. However, causing such chaos may attract City Guards, which prompts the need to hide and evade pursuit.
In addition, players can craft various tools and vehicles, reminiscent of Tears of the Kingdom. For instance, aircrafts can be constructed using only materials found in the environment. Players can use these to traverse the city’s skies and even blast enemies from on high. These creations can even be summoned pre-built during combat to aid in battles.
Wangyue Story
In Wangyue, players assume the role of Qing Wu, individuals on a quest to uncover the significance of recurring memories associated with "Looking at the Moon." This leads them to confront the Nine World Suns, entities that disrupt the world’s natural order and cause various calamities.
The narrative draws inspiration from the Chinese myth of Houyi shooting down extra suns to restore balance, reinterpreting it within a contemporary context. As players progress, they will learn about the relationships between the moon, the world, and the nine suns, striving to return harmony to their environment.
