DELTARUNE
Release Date Gameplay & Story Pre-Order & DLC Chapter 1 & 2 Review Chapter 3 & 4 Review

DELTARUNE is an all-new story by the dog/mind behind the beloved indie game, UNDERTALE, featuring new and familiar characters! Read on to learn how it plays, what it’s about, and everything else we know so far.

DELTARUNE Gameplay

Image

DELTARUNE is a traditional turn-based RPG with a heavy emphasis on narrative, as you go on your adventures through the game's different areas. In combat, players will control a party of three, which initially consists of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei.

Turn-Based Combat, Pacifism, and Bullet Hell

The game focuses around a party of individual characters, where players can tell each member what to do for every turn, be it FIGHTing, ACTing, using MAGIC, DEFENDing, or giving MERCY.

The combat in the game is infused with the patented Toby Fox twist, where, similar to UNDERTALE, players can opt not to fight and defeat enemies by choosing ACT to either talk, befriend, or lull their enemies to sleep in order to end conflicts without hurting them.

When enemies attack in DELTARUNE, they will unleash an onslaught of various Bullet Hell/Touhou-inspired attack patterns, similar to UNDERTALE. Players must dodge these attacks to avoid damage and survive. Different enemies have different patterns and behaviors, with some being quite unconventional.

TP Meter

Image

The TP meter, where the former stands for 'Tension Points', is a party-wide mana pool where every member of the party draws their resources from, and can be gained or used depending on the chosen action for each character.

FIGHT and MAGIC will primarily spend TP, while most ACTs and DEFENDing will build up TP. Narrowly avoiding opponents' bullet attacks also fills the TP meter.

Exploration

DELTARUNE's overworld has players exploring through various locations in both the Light World and the Dark World. Players can interact with characters for dialogue and hidden events, find items, solve puzzles, or even face secret bosses. Certain environments also have obstacles for the player to overcome, like bullet hell sections.

Enemies in the Overworld

Unlike UNDERTALE's random encounter battles, DELTARUNE lets players see enemies in the overworld. This gives them more control over which enemies they will engage with or not.

DELTARUNE Story

Image

DELTARUNE takes place in a parallel universe from UNDERTALE, where all of its characters live in the same world, albeit in very different conditions. Furthermore, new characters join the fold, from Kris, Susie, Noelle, and Ralsei. Most notably, DELTARUNE is an anagram of UNDERTALE, similarly to how a new major character, the aforementioned Ralsei, is an anagram of Asriel, one of the major characters in UNDERTALE.

Toby Fox has clarified that though there will be countless similarities and familiarities between the two games, they are completely different and separate experiences and universes, and that the names and characters are the most similar aspects they will ever have.

DELTARUNE Setting

Image

DELTARUNE begins in a place called Hometown, where its main characters, Kris and Susi,e reside in. Several characters who bear a striking resemblance to those in UNDERTALE are also present here, such as Toriel, Sans, Alphys, Undyne, and more.

The cast will then be transported to the Dark World, where its inhabitants view Kris and Susie's realm as the Light World. In the Dark World, they can wield all sorts of magical powers, weapons, and encounter MONSTERS who also possess these arcane feats.

DELTARUNE Plot

DELTARUNE follows Kris, a silent HUMAN high-schooler in a world inhabited by MONSTERs. They are the adopted child of the beloved goat mom and school teacher Toriel. In Professor Alphy’s class in school, Kris partners with the bully, Susie, for a class project. As the two enter the school closet to retrieve supplies, they suddenly find themselves in a mysterious world where they can wield powers.

Within the world of the closet, they meet the ‘Prince of the Dark’ Ralsei, who recounts to them an ancient prophecy wherein a HUMAN, a MONSTER, and a PRINCE all worked together to save the Light World and Dark World from an unnatural imbalance that would cause calamity.

The three, with a reluctant Susie, then combine forces to seal rogue Dark Fountains that have been spawning, causing said imbalance between both worlds. Though they get off to a rocky start due to a certain Lancer’s shenanigans and Susie following suit, they eventually reconcile and work together towards their prophesied quest of saving the two worlds.
