DELTARUNE Gameplay
DELTARUNE is traditional turn-based RPG with heavy emphasis with its narrative as you go on your adventures through the game's different areas. However, the combat is inject with the patented Toby Fox twist, where, similar to UNDERTALE, players can opt not to fight and defeat enemies, but instead ACT to either talk, befriend, or lull your enemies to sleep in order to end conflicts without hurting them, i.e. Pacifism. However, players must still dodge and survive the onslought of various unique Bullet Hell/Touhou-inspired attack patterns from enemies similar to UNDERTALE.
The game focus around a party of individual characters, where players can tell each member what to do for every turn, be it FIGHTing, ACTing, using MAGIC, DEFENDing, or giving MERCY. A unique mechanic entering the fray is the TP meter, where TP stands for Tension Points. The TP meter is a party-wide mana pool where every member of the party draws their resources from, and can be gained or used depending on the chosen action for each character. FIGHT and MAGIC will primarily spend TP, while most ACTs and DEFENDing will build up TP. Narrowly avoiding opponent's bullet attacks also fill the TP meter.
DELTARUNE Story
DELTARUNE takes place in a parallel universe from UNDERTALE, where all of its characters live in the same world, albeit in very different conditions. Furthermore, new characters join the fold, from Kris, Susie, Noelle, and Ralsei. Most notably, DELTARUNE is an anagram of UNDERTALE, similarly to how a new major character, the aforementioned Ralsei, is an anagram of Asriel, one of the major characters in UNDERTALE. Toby Fox has clarified that though there will be countless similarities and familiarities between the two games, they are completely different and separate experiences and universes, and that the names and characters are the most similar aspects they will ever have.
DELTARUNE is the story of Kris and a highschool bully Susie who enter a closet room in school to find themselves in the Dark World, where they can wield all sorts of magical powers and are destined to save the world, as foretold and guided by Prince Ralsei. Through their adventures, the three of them meet all kinds of zany characters, such as the lovable Lancer. At the end of each day, the two journey back to their world and become closer friends after each adventure.
