Freedom Wars Remastered Overview

Freedom Wars Remastered is an updated version of the original Freedom Wars, a dystopian action RPG that debuted on the PS Vita in 2014. It is available on PC, the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5. It was released on January 10, 2025, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the original release.

The game takes players to a bleak future, year 102014, where humanity is sequestered within a large urban prison-states known as Panopticons as a consequence of ecological collapse and scarcity of resources. Players assume the role of a "Sinner," a convict sentenced to one million years of imprisonment simply for existing. To reduce their sentence, Sinners must undertake hazardous missions to recover abducted civilians from colossal bioweapons referred to as Abductors.

Sinners have the ability to use Thorns in combat, which are grappling tools that enable them to move dynamically and interact with their environment and enemies. Players can customize their characters and utilize AI-controlled partners known as Accessories during combat encounters. This remastered version incorporates improved visuals with support for resolutions up to 4K at 60 frames per second, an overhauled crafting system, and rebalanced difficulty options.

Freedom Wars Remastered Gameplay

As a "Sinner," players must shorten their million-year sentence by completing missions. These include battling towering mechanical enemies called Abductors to rescue civilians and gather resources. Players make use of both melee and ranged weaponry during combat, alongside the Thorn—a grappling hook-like tool used to maneuver across terrain and disable enemies.

To maximize chances of survival, a four-member squad can be assembled to tackle various mission objectives. Players can team up with up to three friends to complete story missions. For those who prefer a solo experience, however, AI companions known as Accessories can be recruited to provide additional support. Moreover, Freedom Wars Remastered will also feature PvP battles, where up to eight players can clash in combat.

Confined to Mixed Reviews

Freedom Wars Remastered currently holds a Metacritic score of 73. While critics generally acknowledged its strong online features, opinions on the game’s overall quality varied. Game8, for instance, gave it a score of 74 out of 100, lauding its gameplay but criticizing the underdeveloped story within its rich setting. Conversely, Destructoid, awarding it a score of 8 out of 10, found the story intriguing while expressing disappointment with the lack of impactful stat options within its extensive customization system.

Nintendo Life, on the other hand, gave Freedom Wars Remastered a 7 out of 10, praising its gameplay but criticizing the minimal performance improvements in the Switch version. RPG Site, despite acknowledging the narrative’s shortcomings in fulfilling its initial potential, still praised the gameplay, resulting in an 8 out of 10 score.
