Freedom Wars Remastered Overview

Freedom Wars Remastered is an updated version of the original Freedom Wars, a dystopian action RPG that debuted on the PS Vita in 2014. It will be available on PC, the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5. Scheduled for release on January 10, 2025, the remaster marks the 10th anniversary of the original game.

The game is set in a bleak future, year 102014, where humanity is confined to massive city-prisons known as Panopticons due to ecological collapse and scarcity of resources. Players take on the role of a "Sinner," a convict sentenced to one million years of imprisonment for the crime of existence. To reduce their sentence, Sinners engage in high-risk missions to rescue abducted civilians from colossal bioweapons called Abductors.

Sinners have the ability to use Thorns in combat, which are grappling tools that enable them to move dynamically and interact with their environment and enemies. During battles, players can customize their characters and rely on their AI companions called Accessories. The remastered edition features enhanced graphics supporting up to 4K at 60 FPS, an overhauled crafting system, and rebalanced difficulty options.

Freedom Wars Remastered Gameplay

As a "Sinner," players must shorten their million-year sentence by completing missions. These include battling towering mechanical enemies called Abductors to rescue civilians and gather resources. Players make use of both melee and ranged weaponry during combat, alongside the Thorn—a grappling hook-like tool used to maneuver across terrain and disable enemies.

To maximize chances of survival, a four-member squad can be assembled to tackle various mission objectives. Players can team up with up to three friends to complete story missions. For those who prefer a solo experience, however, AI companions known as Accessories can be recruited to provide additional support. Moreover, Freedom Wars Remastered will also feature PvP battles, where up to eight players can clash in combat.

Freedom Wars Reviews

Confined to Mixed Reviews

Image

Freedom Wars has yet to be released, but the game’s original outing on the PS Vita received mixed reviews, garnering a 73 out of 100 on Metacritic. While critics praised its robust customization options and online capabilities, they were divided on its overall quality. IGN, for instance, awarded the game an 8/10, commending its gameplay mechanics, but criticized its underdeveloped storyline despite having a rich lore. Similarly, Destructoid gave it an 8/10, acknowledging its customization and online aspects but highlighting technical issues and a slow start.

However, Eurogamer was less impressed, assigning a 5/10 rating. They recognized the game’s strong combat system, but they also pointed out its clunky controls and lackluster plot development.

Despite these mixed critical reviews, the game has garnered a generally favorable user score of 8.2 on Metacritic. Players, like critics, appreciated its customization and combat systems but often cite the controls and lack of enemy variety as drawbacks.
