Hollow Knight Gameplay
Hollow Knight is a 2D Metroidvania-style action-adventure game, and as such, exploration, while non-linear, will have players search for items and upgrades to access previously unreachable areas. As players progress through the game, they can gain new movement abilities like double jumps and wall clings.
These upgrades can also be used in combat. Battling enemies often requires dodging and dashing to survive, as combat is based on recognizing and countering enemy attack patterns. Damaging these enemies primarily involves the Nail, a sword-like melee weapon, but players will also have access to a variety of spells for ranged attacks.
Equippable Charms offer passive benefits, such as increased damage or movement enhancements. Charms require notches to equip, and overloading the system can penalize players by increasing damage taken. Take enough damage and the player-controlled Knight will perish. Death doesn’t mean Game Over, however, as it triggers a Dark Souls-like mechanic, where players lose Geo (currency) and part of their Soul gauge until they retrieve it by defeating a Shade at the site of their demise.
Hollow Knight Story
The Knight descends upon Dirtmouth, a desolate town clinging to the edge of forgotten greatness, perched above the ruins of Hallownest. This once-glorious kingdom of insects now lies shrouded in its own shadow, undone by the corruption of the Infection, a plague that bestows unnatural strength upon its victims but drives them to madness, rendering them as little more than twisted echoes of their former selves—some even risen as the undead. Hallownest’s Pale King sought to contain this blight through desperate measures. But his efforts ultimately faltered, leaving the kingdom in ruins.
In a quest to aid the kingdom—or perhaps to uncover their own purpose—the Knight must confront the Dreamers, beings who serve as living seals to the temple where the source of the Infection festers. Along the way, the Knight must navigate the conflict between lingering forces of Hallownest’s past. Chief among these is Hornet, a warrior who opposes the Knight for reasons initially unclear.
