PlayStation Productions has unveiled several game adaptations in development during CES 2025. Read on to find out which PlayStation games are being adapted for release in 2025 and beyond.
PlayStation Productions Revealed Multiple Game Adaptations
Featuring Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and More
PlayStation Productions comes big at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, announcing multiple game adaptations on January 7, 2025.
First among the adaptations revealed was Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new anime series made by Crunchyroll and Aniplex. "The anime will exclusively premiere on Crunchyroll in 2027," said the anime-streaming platform. It will be directed by Takanobu Mizumo, while Gen Urobuchi will take care of its story composition. Additionally, Sony Music will serve as a music and soundtrack partner.
Moving forward, head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash and president of Screen Gems Ashley Brucks revealed that Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 films are in the works. Sony Pictures will produce the former, with Columbia Pictures handling the latter. However, not much is revealed about these upcoming movies. After the reveal, they teased the film adaptation of Until Dawn, releasing on April 25, 2025.
Finally, Neil Druckmann takes the stage. After giving a brief remark about Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Druckmann unveiled a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, adapting the storyline from TLOU II and featuring new characters, like Abby and Dina.
With multiple productions in the works, PlayStation is surely widening its horizon in terms of videogame adaptations. If they are successful, more franchises might be developed into other mediums in the future.
PlayStation Productions’ Previously Released Adaptations
This is not the first time Sony dipped into videogame adaptations. One of the earliest videogame adaptations is Resident Evil, which was released in 2002, starring Mila Jovovich. From there, five more sequels were produced due to high demand. Another popular game franchise turned movie is Silent Hill, produced in 2006. Though fans of both franchises are not too happy with these adaptations, they are successful in terms of box office performance.
On the other hand, Sony established PlayStation Productions in 2019 to produce adaptations of PS-exclusive games. Its first notable adaptation was Uncharted (2022), which is a film based on the popular action-adventure game Uncharted, starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. In 2023, it also released a Gran Turismo film. Both films performed successfully at the box office, earning more than the budget spent on producing them.
PS Productions also released a Twisted Metal series on Peacock in 2023, where drivers battle using vehicles armed with various weapons and projectiles. Though not as well-received as the TLOU series, this post-apocalyptic action comedy show finished the production of season 2 in late 2024. However, the release date for season 2 is not yet announced.
Though not mentioned during CES 2025, PS Productions is also working on films based on Days Gone and a sequel to the first Uncharted film. Moreover, it is working on a God of War TV series, though not much information has been revealed.
Considering the trajectory of Sony and PlayStation Productions, it seems likely that more popular and major video game franchises under them will be considered for adaptation, driven by popular demand and viability as either a TV show or a film.
