Until Dawn Horror Film Adaptation by Annabelle: Creation Director and Writer Announced
Until Dawn Movie will be an R-Rated Homage to the Horror Genre Featuring Ensemble Cast
Sony's Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions were reported to make a film adaptation of the interactive horror video game Until Dawn. The movie will be directed by David F. Sandberg, best known for his extensive work on horror short films. The director has won awards for movies such as the 2017 horror/mystery Annabelle: Creation and 2016 supernatural horror movie Lights Out.
The logline for the movie is kept under wraps, but Screen Gems described the feature adaptation as an "R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast" (via The Hollywood Reporter).
PlayStation Studios President Asad Qizilbash announced the project on Twitter (X), saying:
"As our partnership with Sony Pictures continues to grow, we're thrilled to work on our first movie with Screen Gems. We have a creative dream team working on Until Dawn, all huge fans of the game. @Sony @PlayStation @SonyPictures @CarterSwan"
Looks to be in Its Pre-Production Stage
Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter of horror hits like It, Annabelle, and The Nun, was reported to be reviewing an earlier draft of the script written by Sony’s vampire thriller's, The Invitation, screenwriter, Blair Butler. Dauberman signed a First-look deal with Screen Gems and Sony Pictures in 2023 to work on horror movies.
Until Dawn originally released in 2015 for PlayStation 4 and gained acclaim for its immersive and suspenseful storytelling. The game revolves around eight friends brought together at a remote mountain retreat, navigating live-or-die scenarios involving a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, and more. The success of the game led to spinoffs and sequels, such as Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, The Inpatient, and The Quarry.
Sony Pictures, through its collaboration with PlayStation Productions, has been actively adapting PlayStation games for television and film. This includes projects like HBO's The Last of Us, and upcoming shows for God of War and Horizon.
