The Legend of California Limited Access Playtest Begins March 26
PC-Only Test with Online Multiplayer Focus

The Legend of California’s studio, Kintsugiyama, has announced the first public alpha playtest of its budding multiplayer survival game ahead of its Early Access release. The limited-time test will run from March 26 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET to March 30 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET and will be available exclusively to PC users via Steam.
While there is no dedicated single-player mode, players can explore solo or team up with up to three others in its online multiplayer experience. Those looking to join the alpha playtest should prepare by freeing up 50GB of storage space. According to Kintsugiyama’s official Steam post, an SSD is required for optimal performance, and controller support will be available, albeit in an "early and limited state."
The alpha playtest’s servers will be located on the U.S. West Coast and will feature English-only localization. Players connecting from other regions may experience latency issues.

Those interested in trying out the Wild West survival game can request access through Steam’s "Request Access" system. However, only a limited number of players will be selected. Participants who are chosen will receive a notification, and the alpha client will be automatically added to their Steam library.
Kintsugiyama has also confirmed that playing the alpha playtest will not offer any special freebies. Progress made during the alpha stage will not carry over to future versions, and no in-game rewards will be available. However, the studio assured players that a larger beta is planned for Summer 2026, giving more players the chance to try the game before its Early Access launch.
A New Direction from the Former Overwatch Director

Developed by former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan, The Legend of California marks a departure from his previous hero shooter work. The game is a multiplayer survival experience set on the fictional Island of California, where players share a persistent world, gather resources through mining and other activities, and ride horses to explore the island during the height of a Gold Rush-inspired era.
Additionally, the survival game will feature a wide array of systems, including a robust customization setup for both weapons and player progression. Players will be able to mod their weapons for unique effects, such as reducing a shotgun’s spread or increasing its range, allowing for highly personalized playstyles.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, players can build and customize their own homestead, creating a personal sanctuary amidst the game’s uncharted lands. Combined with its other systems, the game offers a balanced PvE experience, while players seeking greater challenges can engage in PvP within designated zones.

The studio has been on a marketing push over the past few weeks, with Jeff Kaplan participating in a series of interviews and showcasing over 10 hours of gameplay footage from his latest passion project. Players interested in seeing how the game plays can watch their livestream on YouTube, with dedicated timestamps provided in the comments section highlighting key mechanics and notable moments.
The Legend of California is now available to wishlist on Steam, and players can also join its official Discord server. While the game does not yet have a confirmed release date, an Early Access period is expected to launch soon.
