Subnautica 2 is finally heading to Early Access this May after months of delays and a major legal dispute. Here’s what to know about the release, leadership changes, and what it means for the game moving forward.
Subnautica 2 Finally Set for Early Access
Releasing in May 2026

Subnautica 2 is set to enter Early Access this May on PC and Xbox, with the release target confirmed in a March 18 statement from developer Unknown Worlds. The update follows months of delays tied to a legal dispute with publisher Krafton and the recent reinstatement of former CEO Ted Gill.
In a statement shared with IGN, Unknown Worlds said the team has made significant progress on Subnautica 2, including the addition of more story chapters, new creatures, and new biomes, alongside other features. The team added, "We have full confidence that we have reached a point where we can deliver an experience our players will love."

The studio also confirmed it recently passed Krafton’s milestone review, clearing the way for its Early Access rollout and the start of its open development with the community. Krafton has also signaled support for the release, noting the team has made "meaningful progress."
What Led to the Delays

The dispute dates back to July 2025, when publisher Krafton replaced Unknown Worlds’ leadership—Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire—effective immediately, appointing Steve Papoutsis as CEO. At the time, the company cited a need for "renewed momentum" but did not provide detailed reasoning for the sudden change.
The former leaders later filed a lawsuit alleging that Krafton had hindered Subnautica 2’s development and taken steps to delay its release, including raising concerns about the game’s readiness, pulling marketing efforts, and failing to follow through on pre-launch commitments, before ultimately removing them after it learned it could be required to pay a $250 million bonus. The bonus was part of an acquisition agreement, with the payout dependent on the game launching within a set window and meeting performance targets.

Krafton disputed these claims, maintaining that the game was not ready for Early Access and required further development to meet player expectations. The disagreement ultimately contributed to Subnautica 2’s release window shifting to 2026.
While legal proceedings remain ongoing, the ruling allows the project to move forward with Ted Gill reinstated as CEO, and extended the conditions for a $250 million bonus tied to the game’s Early Access release. Krafton said it disagrees with the decision and intends to explore further legal options but added that its priority is to "minimize disruption to the team and to the release plan."
What’s New in Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 is expected to expand on the series’ survival gameplay with a new alien ocean world, introducing new environments, creatures, and story elements alongside planned co-op multiplayer for up to four players. Previous updates have also highlighted several key features, including a new submersible vehicle called the Tadpole and an overhauled base-building system.
The sequel will continue the series’ exploration-focused gameplay loop, with players scanning environments, gathering resources, and unlocking new tools to survive in increasingly dangerous depths. Early previews have also showcased new threats, including a deep-sea Leviathan-class predator designed to react dynamically to player actions.
