What’s Next for Resident Evil?

The Resident Evil franchise has killed it with its remakes, setting a standard for horror survival remakes. Luckily for fans, more remakes of Resident Evil classics are soon to come, according to the Resident Evil 4 remake director Yasuhiro Anpo in a PlayStation Partner event in Japan.

According to Anpo (as reported by IGN), the three remakes released so far have been very well received. "Since it allows a modern audience to play these games, it is something I am happy to do as someone that loves these older games, and we want to continue doing more." Anpo did not reveal which game they’re remaking next, but will be announced soon.

With the remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 out of the way, fans speculate that Resident Evil Code: Veronica, the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, or the more action-heavy Resident Evil 5 are up next to be remade.

Advantages of Remakes

According to Anpo, it’s impossible to know which parts of a game will be well-received when developing a game. "In the case of a remake, there are already players that have played the original, which I think can be seen as an advantage. We are very grateful to users that are vocal about their opinion. It allows us to develop with the player’s opinion in mind. For example, if this is how the players feel, then maybe we can make it like this. I think this is one of the reasons why our remakes are so well received." she continued.

Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, Resident Evil 4 remake’s producer, mentioned that Capcom has been using their very own RE Engine for many of their titles, and that doing so has its benefits. This hints at their plans to stick with the engine for their future titles. Hirabayashi also credited their company’s development speed to sharing information between teams.
