Everything We Know About John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Story Plot

Set in a twisted original world created by the famed writer and director John Carpenter, an audacious attempt to harness the Earth's core for clean energy goes disastrously wrong and unleashes the Sludge God—a nightmarish, eldritch entity with the power to transform the landscape into a grotesque wasteland. With the soil turning to toxic sludge and the living becoming undead monstrosities, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Desperate to reverse the catastrophe, the experiment’s mastermind assembles a team of mercenaries. The twist? These aren’t the elite commandos you’d expect—budget constraints lead to the hiring of a ragtag group who, based on the trailer, seems bored of firing bazookas to zombie-like hordes.

While little is known about the game's story, John Carpenter himself seems excited for the game. "It’s exciting to be collaborating on a new video game with Focus and Saber," said John Carpenter. "Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they’re called ’the infected.’ Please. They’re ghouls, dude. They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game."

The game also has a prequel comic, titled Rise of the Sludge God, and it reveals the backstory of Leon Dorsey, the ambitious CEO responsible for the experiment. The comic supposedly follows the early days of the infestation as Dorsey's team attempts to clean up the colossal mess.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Gameplay

Toxic Commando is essentially a cooperative first-person shooter that channels the frenetic action of classics like Left 4 Dead with the campy humor and aesthetic of '80s John Carpenter horror films. Expect viscera and bullets filling your screen as you team up with up to three other friends to drive through waves of the undead. You'll wield everything from shotguns and machine guns to bazookas and even a drone that blasts energy waves at your enemies. You will also be able to jump into armed Humvees or trucks bristling with spikes to mow down your enemies and send them straight to the underworld!

Moreover, Toxic Commando also has strategic elements, like upgrading your skills and unlocking new abilities to face tougher challenges as you progress.

8 Combat Missions Incoming

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando will launch with eight missions, alongside a separate tutorial mission. While its full progression system has not yet been detailed, speculation points to an episodic format reminiscent of Left 4 Dead. However, other possibilities remain, such as map-and-objective-based structures similar to FBC: Firebreak or the purely map-driven approach seen in Killing Floor 3.
