John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Gameplay
Toxic Commando is a 4-player co-op first-person shooter that channels the frenetic action of classics like Left 4 Dead with the campy humor and aesthetic of '80s John Carpenter horror films. Expect viscera and bullets filling your screen as you team up with up to three other friends to drive through endless waves of the undead.
Combat and Progression

Players will wield everything from shotguns and machine guns to bazookas and even a drone that blasts energy waves at enemies.
Players can also jump into armed Humvees or trucks bristling with spikes to mow down their enemies and send the undead hordes straight to the underworld.

What ties all this together is the game’s class-based progression system. Players will choose from four classes: Strike (Offense), Medic (Healing), Operator (Utility), and Defender (Tanking). Each has an ability tree with perks that can be unlocked with skill points.
By clearing hordes, supporting teammates, clearing objectives, and more, players can gain EXP. By reaching Levels 5, 10, and 15, classes will receive significant upgrades to abilities.
Semi-Open Map

Players will explore around a semi-open map, scavenging for gear, doing objectives, and fighting Undead hordes. Using map pins and a compass, players can coordinate and strategize which places to loot first.
Vehicle Types

Found during missions are various vehicle types, each specializing in certain roles: ambulances provide healing, police cars can lure hordes, sedans can use nitro boosts, and more.
8 Combat Missions

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando launched with eight missions, alongside a separate tutorial mission. Each mission has players shoot down blockages, find or defend certain points in the map, eliminate enemies, fix structures, and more.
John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Story
John Carpenter's Toxic Commando centers around nine linear narrative missions with an 80’s horror sci-fi "buddy cop" story delivered by the famed writer and director John Carpenter.
The game also has a prequel comic, titled Rise of the Sludge God, and it reveals the backstory of Leon Dorsey, the ambitious CEO responsible for the experiment. The comic supposedly follows the early days of the infestation as Dorsey's team attempts to clean up the colossal mess.
John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Plot
The game’s plot centers around four mercenaries-turned-heroes, who must venture into an apocalyptic Earth that’s been transformed into a grotesque wasteland by the eldritch evil that is the Sludge God. With the soil turning to toxic sludge and the living becoming undead monstrosities, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.
John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Setting

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is set in an Earth much like our own, but a trip to the planet’s core revealed a roiling mass of flesh, known by the name Sludge God. With its ancient power, it corrupted the masses into mindless, mutated Undead.
