The Plucky Squire Overview

The Plucky Squire is a puzzle-platformer developed by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital. Released in September 2024, the game follows Jot, a hero from a storybook. When the villainous Humgrump discovers that Jot is destined to defeat him, he casts the hero out of the storybook and into the real world. Now, Jot must traverse both dimensions: the hand-drawn world of the book and the three-dimensional space of a physical desk. Here, players will solve puzzles and overcome challenges as they guide Jot and restore the storybook’s happy ending.

Seamless transitions between 2D and 3D perspectives define The Plucky Squire’s gameplay. In 2D sections, players navigate hand-drawn pages, solving puzzles and engaging in combat reminiscent of classic top-down adventures. When transitioning to 3D, players interact with real-world objects like cups and stationery to solve puzzles and explore mini-dungeons.

The Plucky Squire Gameplay

Gameplay in The Plucky Squire seamlessly shifts between 2D and 3D perspectives. As Jot ventures through both dimensions, players must adapt to the challenges and limitations presented by each.

2D sections blend exploration with occasional platforming and timing-based puzzles. Players can interact with textual and visual elements within the storybook. Inspired by classic titles like The Legend of Zelda, these sections feature top-down combat and room-based dungeons. Moreover, the game occasionally shifts into other genres, with boss fights introducing unique mechanics reminiscent of iconic video games.

The leap to 3D ushers in new mechanics such as 3D platforming, stealth, and more puzzles that force players to interact with everyday objects like cards or jars in novel ways.

The Plucky Squire Reviews

Bookended by Favorable Reviews

Image

The plucky squire holds a generally favorable score on Metacritic, with the PC version earning an 84 out of 100 and the PS5 version scoring a 77 out of 100. Game8 awarded the game an 82 out of 100, praising its creativity and charm but noting that it doesn't quite reach the heights of a genre-defining title.

IGN, on the other hand, gave it a 7 out of 10, commending the game's clever mechanics while criticizing the drawn-out final act and how its formulaic charm sometimes hinders combat and puzzles. Destructoid, however, awarded it a near-perfect 9 out of 10, with their only complaint being a need for additional polish in certain areas.

Metacritic user reviews are more mixed, averaging a 7.3. Many users have expressed disappointment with the Switch version's performance compared to other platforms. Additionally, some players feel that the game overrelies on hand-holding, not fully trusting players to solve puzzles independently.
