Ereban Shadow Legacy is a stark reminder that the platformer genre will forever be fascinating, and if paired up with stealth mechanics, then you have something special. It has a unique way of traversal with the use of shadows, whether they be moving or not. It’s not a perfect stealth game by any means, but the unique movement and comic-like visuals is enough for me to recommend it to platforming lovers.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Overall - 74/100

Ereban Shadow Legacy is a stark reminder that the platformer genre will forever be fascinating, and if paired up with stealth mechanics, then you have something special. It has a unique way of traversal with the use of shadows, whether they are moving or not. It’s not a perfect stealth game by any means, but the unique movement and comic-like visuals are enough for me to recommend it to platforming lovers.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Story - 7/10

You are Ayana, the last living Ereban, a race with special abilities to become one with the shadows. It’s not the most captivating story by any means, but it’s decent enough to keep you interested in what’s gonna happen next. However, the dialogue in the game could be considered corny and may turn a lot of people off.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Gameplay - 8/10

The gameplay reminds me of older stealth platforming games like Dishonored and Thief, especially since the game is primarily a stealth-focused game. It has different abilities that you could play with that will ultimately change the way you play the game, and I could see what the devs were going for with pushing a certain playstyle so that you could experience the game differently for a second time.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Visuals - 7/10

Visually speaking, it’s not the best-looking game. It does, however, have a comic-like appearance similar to games like Borderlands which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference. Some of the textures aren’t the most defined, but the visual contrast of different lighting is great so that you can tell if you’re covered or not.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Audio - 6/10

The game has musical scores that fit the melancholic "moral grayness" that fits with the vibe of the game. While the music is fine for me personally, the voice acting does have its downsides. Sometimes the voice doesn’t exactly match the situation at hand which impacts the delivery of the dialogue.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Value for Money - 9/10

The game is priced at $24.99 and offers a pretty sizable amount of content. It could take more than 10 hours to fully experience the game, depending on your skill. Exploring each chapter to the fullest could take a little longer as some areas are pretty big and will require you to be a bit more creative with where you go.

Ereban Shadow Legacy Review: Diving Into the Shadow Realm

Image

When I first saw this game back in 2022 in one of the Xbox Showcases, I always thought it was intriguing as it had the "shadow swimming" mechanic, but I never took note of the game afterward. Fast forward to writing this review, I’m glad I got to see this game finally get released. Like before, I was still intrigued with how the game uses shadow swimming to move around the map, as it took me a few chapters to really abuse this mechanic.

While there is some discourse regarding the use of certain visual aids to help the player look for the objective, I appreciate and welcome the help, as I tend to get lost in games that have large maps. It’s even more important here as I think there are chapters when the areas are not as linear as others.

Image

Admittedly, there were some chapters where I was struggling to find the upgrade materials for my abilities and that could be attributed to some of the game’s areas being non-linear in certain chapters. But that’s also where I found the game to be fun with the use of shadow swimming.

The game uses shadows as concealment and a way to make you move around. There are some areas where there are moving shadows based on objects in the background, and you have to time your movement properly so that you can scale gaps that aren't possible if you are in human form. With this, the game hides a lot of its collectibles in obscure places that you’d find collectibles in other platformers and makes them a puzzle to solve on how to get to those places as well.

Image

Overall, the game is interesting and has an identity when it comes to its unique movement and narrative. You could opt to neutralize anything and everything in your path, or just opt to avoid them altogether. It’s a platformer that I would recommend for fans of the genre as the creativity you have in how to get around levels is immense.

Pros of Ereban Shadow Legacy

Things Ereban Shadow Legacy Got Right
Checkmark Creative Movement Mechanics
Checkmark Variety of Abilities to Unlock and Use
Checkmark Great Visual Clarity

Creative Movement Mechanics

Image

With the ability to "Shadow Merge" which is inspired by Splatoon’s ink-swimming mechanic, you can "swim" in any shadow in the game. So you can climb on top of buildings, move through barricades, and even get through gaps using moving shadows. This unique movement ability is robust and gives you different ways to approach different scenarios.

Variety of Abilities to Unlock and Use

Image

The game has different abilities unlockable throughout the game, split between the game’s morality system. Some abilities are more lethal and have a focus on taking down your opponents, while others are more for avoidance and non-lethal ways to advance through the game’s chapters.

Additionally, the game actually lets you clap to lure enemies in, which is honestly quite refreshing, as I don’t see the feature of making noise freely without the use of a gadget or resource a lot in different stealth games.

Great Visual Clarity

Image

The color contrast of the game works in tandem with the gameplay as you will rely on the shadows a LOT. The visual effects and lighting do a great job of telling the player if you’re under cover or in the shade, and works even better later on in the game when you get more powers.

Cons of Ereban Shadow Legacy

Things That Ereban Shadow Legacy Can Improve
Checkmark Stiff Animations
Checkmark Corny Dialogue
Checkmark Other Abilities Are Locked Based On Choices

Stiff Animations

Image

Some of the animations in the game especially in cutscenes, are pretty stiff. This could be attributed to using Unity as an engine and honestly isn't that big of a deal. However, it is noticeably stiff in cutscenes as well as the jumping animation. It doesn't really affect the gameplay in any way, but is visually off-putting especially if you decide to spam the jump and clap at the same time.

Corny Dialogue

Image

The game’s dialogue is corny, at least for me. I’m not the biggest fan of the humor that they use in the game, especially when it comes to the interactions between Ayana and one of the supporting characters, but it kind of feels like it's forced. While the tone of the game does need some lighthearted moments not to make it feel as intense, the way the game does it just isn’t for me.

Other Abilities Are Locked Based On Choices

Image

In the story cutscenes that chapters have, you will have to make some choices regarding your powers. While this is a way to push for the game’s morality system, it will take a second playthrough to see what the other side has to offer. Preferably, it would’ve been good to have the skill tree be open and just have the morality system be an open choice rather than a choice of either ability at certain points in the game.

Is Ereban Shadow Legacy Worth It?

Yes, Definitely Worth For Shadow Swimming Alone

Image

Ereban: Shadow Legacy is an interesting game to play, especially for those who are fans of stealth platformers. It has an interesting level design that allows for creativity for the game’s shadow movement system and has a lot of collectibles to encourage players to explore and find more resources for upgrading their abilities. For $25, the game offers a lot of replayability especially since you’ll need to do two playthroughs to experience the other side of things as well.
