In this game, players have access to guns and weapons, as well as abilities that differ based on the protagonists' skill sets.

Both Saga Anderson and Alan Wake have distinct skill sets, with Anderson being a field agent capable of analyzing evidence, and Wake being a writer able to manipulate the dark reality he’s found himself in. In this game, the main enemies are simply known as The Taken, shadowy humanoid beings that are made vulnerable by shining on them an equipped flashlight.

In the town of Bright Falls, a string of ritualistic murders have been happening, prompting the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to send field agent Saga Anderson to investigate. At Bright Falls, Anderson finds herself in the middle of a supernatural horror story - with the crime novelist Alan Wake, who went missing 13 years ago, being at the center of it all.

The game features two parallel narratives centered around Anderson’s and Alan Wake’s storylines, which are told through shifting perspectives. Alan Wake 2 is released as a standalone entry in the Alan Wake franchise, meaning players may play Alan Wake 2 without any prior experience with the original Alan Wake title.
