Baldur's Gate 3 Overview
Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3) is a narrative-driven action RPG developed and published by Larian Studios as part of the Baldur's Gate series. It serves as the third mainline game following Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and is the fifth game to use the Baldur's Gate title, including spin-offs like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II.
Baldur’s Gate 3 centers around a flexible RPG system that empowers players to approach combat and narrative choices freely. Players control a four-person squad of adventurers investigating a conspiracy unfolding in the Sword Coast region of Faerûn. Built on the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (D&D 5e), the game uses dice rolls and modifiers to determine outcomes in combat, skill checks, and dialogue.
Throughout their journey, players encounter new NPCs, acquire equipment, explore diverse areas, and unlock various combat and interaction options. Each character also advances through personal questlines, all leading toward the city of Baldur’s Gate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Gameplay
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a third-person, action RPG that allows players to control a party of up to four adventurers as they journey across the Sword Coast region of Faerun. Gameplay focuses on resource management and tactical decision-making, guiding players through combat, exploration, and story-driven encounters via a point-and-click-style RPG system.
Combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 is turn-based, giving each party member the ability to manage their actions individually. Actions can include attacking with weapons, casting spells, using skills, or avoiding threats. Outcomes of these actions are based on dice rolls, with character stats and modifiers influencing the likelihood of success for each move.
Narrative encounters and exploration are similarly dice-driven, allowing players to apply specific skills or proficiencies during interactions to achieve desired outcomes, such as persuading NPCs or using Athletics to clear obstacles.
Players can customize each party member through 12 main classes, 46 subclasses, and a wide variety of unique items and equipment, creating specific builds to fulfill roles in both combat and social encounters. The game also includes 10 unlockable companions, each with their own personalities, backgrounds, and dialogue options; all of which contribute to an interconnected, fully explorable, semi-open-world map.

Baldur's Gate 3 Trivia
⚫︎ In the early-access build of the game, Astarion would take damage whenever he crossed a river or stream, likely as a nod to classic vampire folklore, which holds that vampires can’t cross running water. This detail has since been changed for the game’s full release.
⚫︎ The default player character name, “Tav,” is actually a nod to Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke’s dog, Gustav.
⚫︎ Withers, the game’s enigmatic camp NPC who provides various resurrection and hireling services to the player, is likely a powerful follower of Jergal—the D&D god of death and fate—or a manifestation of Jergal himself. This is evidenced by numerous dialogue instances with Withers himself, as well as an entry in his diary that can be found in Act 3.
