Octopath Traveler 0 is the latest title of the Octopath Traveler series that seeks to deliver Champions of the Continent to the consoles and PC. Read on to learn everything we know, our first impressions of the game, and more.

Octopath Traveler 0 Plot
Octopath Traveler 0 begins in Wishvale, a town located on the continent of Orsterra, during its annual Day of Reverence. At the festival’s climax, as the ceremonial blue flame is about to be lit, the settlement is suddenly engulfed in flames by a mysterious assailant. The player-created protagonist survives this attack. Faced with ruin, that character must choose between two overarching plots: one of restoration, rebuilding what was lost, or one of revenge, pursuing those responsible for the attack.
Octopath Traveler 0 Gameplay
For the first time in the series, Octopath Traveler 0 lets players create a custom protagonist, choosing their appearance, voice, skills, and even favorite dish. Combat splits eight members into front-row vanguards and back-row rearguards, and players can freely swap between rows. Core mechanics like Break and Boost return, now tuned for a larger team and faster BP generation.
Characters wield new “Ultimate Techniques,” each with a three-phase gauge that dramatically scales in power, and they can learn transferable “Action Skills” shared across the roster. The protagonist is the only one able to change jobs and learn multiple Ultimates, giving them exceptional build flexibility. Classic Path Actions also return with expanded functionality, allowing characters to influence recruitment, gather items, interact with NPCs, and assist in town-building. These actions now play a larger role in progression by helping gather information and local specialties.
A major new feature is the town-reconstruction system, which unlocks after a major story event early on. Players rebuild their settlement on a grid, placing houses, workshops, and other structures using resources like wood, stone, and cloth. The town can host more than 100 invited NPCs and be furnished with over 200 decorative items. Facilities such as the Training Ground, shops, and cooking stations provide meaningful benefits to the journey, including automated experience gain and powerful buffs.

Familiar, But Better
If you haven’t been living under a rock (like I have) over the past handful of years, Octopath Traveler is a series of pixel JRPGs developed by Square Enix and partner studios, praised for its visuals and mechanics. Story—well, not so much, but it was fine.
While most of its entries were made for PC and console, much of my experience with it comes from the mobile game, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent; a gacha game that somehow felt much better to play than its siblings because of how it approached storytelling.
Oh, and because it has Kaine from Nier Replicant, whom I enjoyed using in my party extensively (I’m totally not being biased here).
Thankfully, that was a good place to start going into the latest title of the series, Octopath Traveler 0, as the latter is based heavily on the mobile game but with added features and story bits.
Okay, maybe not just “bits,” as there’s entirely new storylines added. Overall, though, I think the new additions have greatly improved the base experience, albeit with a few caveats.
A Story About Revival
Octopath Traveler 0, which is essentially an expanded version of the mobile game, carries over the main conflict that first puts you at odds with the three great powers of the continent: Herminia, “The Covetous Witch,” Tytos, the “Hero,” and Auguste, “The Playwright.”
Of course, that’s not the entire conflict, but for the purposes of introducing the story, that’s enough.
Unlike Champions of the Continent, however, you are no longer just a random schmuck who gets caught by the cold in the middle of a snowfall and summoned by a suspicious hooded man. Instead, you are the son/daughter of Fried, head of the Watchmen from the village of Wishvale, set to live your life quietly as part of the village guard with your best friend, the carpenter apprentice Stia.
But just like in other not-too-dissimilar RPGs like Unicorn Overlord and Yggdra Union, your village is razed to the ground by the actions of Herminia, Tytos, and Auguste, the game’s first set of antagonists, in their search for one of the gods’ rings. You, alongside Stia, manage to escape and take refuge under Nomos, a silent scholar who lives hidden from sight.
After some time, both of you decide to return to what’s left of your village to rebuild it from scratch, not willing to leave your homeland in a state of utter ruin. But just as you’re starting out, Nomos approaches the protagonist, revealing that the mysterious Ring of the Flamebearer has appointed you as its Chosen One. At the same time, he also tasks you with retrieving the other rings, which are in the possession of the same trio that killed your loved ones, thus starting the main questlines.
For those who came from the mobile game, some of the information above is immediately striking. After all, you now have an origin story, as well as a new purpose: to rebuild Wishvale Village. This is depicted as a parallel questline to the main one, which you can undertake regardless of which antagonist you plan on tackling first, and it involves some very engaging, if rather grindy, mechanics.
The effects of this parallel story are also very pronounced. For one, having more than one purpose makes you, or rather the protagonist, much more human. After all, they’re no longer driven by a singular goal like a robot would be, which is already very high praise considering a lot of RPG protagonists, particularly self-insert ones like Link and even the protagonist from Champions of the Continent, don’t even have that.
Rebuilding the Village Isn’t Just a Storyline
Another effect of the new storyline is in the gameplay. That is, reconstruction of the village isn’t depicted as just a series of quests you take using the features of the original game. Octopath Traveler 0 instead introduces a whole laundry list of mechanics and features centered entirely around it.
Path Actions, for example—previously an ingenious and constantly surprising way to interact with various NPCs (I always tried to fight them because I would pretend to be a school bully)—receive an entirely new action to facilitate managing your new reconstruction project’s population issues. Now, you can technically “steal” NPCs from towns and place them on your own.
Then there’s the addition of a city-building system that allows you to freely decide what and where everything is built and who gets to man facilities like the tavern, church, or training grounds, or get free housing. This is further supported by characters obtaining new abilities that contribute to the town’s development, such as increasing bonuses from essential facilities or providing you with a steady supply of materials and supplies.
This is an insanely addicting part of the game that can threaten dozens of hours of nothing but trying to fit doodads together and traveling to different towns just to hunt for residents.
You can’t just go ham on this side of the game, though, which is rather unfortunate. To unlock more areas to build on or gain access to more residents and buildings, you’ll need to progress through the new storyline, which itself is tied to your progress in the original storyline.
Party Progression Feels More Organic, Though a Bit Awkward
Speaking of the storyline, since there’s no character gacha anymore that allows you to field an entire army right off the bat, you’ll actually have to meet characters in-game and convince them to join you. Shocker, right?
Now, while this is very organic and resembles how a party is formed throughout your playthrough like in a normal RPG such as Ar tonelico or Soul Nomad, it does come with a bit of a problem. See, besides the new storyline where the writers are able to design the narrative around the characters you’ve previously obtained, the original storyline doesn’t have that kind of leeway.
The original routes were written with gacha mechanics in mind, so any non-essential character you obtain during your journey doesn’t make any narrative impact in the main story beyond their own small parts here and there.
The Audiovisuals Are Scaled Well
Being a mobile game previously, I would have thought that upscaling it to 1440p or above would somehow make the pixel art look less like a stylistic choice and more of an inevitability. However, despite my assumptions, everything looks very good, albeit not as appealing as its previous release, Octopath Traveler II. At the very least, it doesn't look like a cheap attempt to throw the game into an emulator and pass it off as another game entirely.
The audio, though, is an easy win. It already sounded good on mobile, so it wasn’t a hard sell to expect the same quality on PC. Some soundtracks in particular, such as boss themes, hit hard enough to get stuck in my head well after I've finished the fight. But I’ve read that some users have issues with it like the audio sounding compressed or whatnot. I personally haven’t experienced any of it. Hopefully the problem gets resolved on their end, though.
That aside, they also did a great job with the UI. It looks clean, and it often tries to get out of your way so you can appreciate the world more. Everything's also placed where they're easy to memorize, and none of them go so deep that it becomes a hassle to navigate to (unlike in Champions of the Continent). On the other hand, I do have issues with navigating it because, for some reason, they tied the controls to your WASD keys instead of your mouse, despite the fact that it came from a mobile game with touch controls.
Unfortunately, I’ve still yet to finish the game; playing on release gives you limited airtime when the developers have boasted an absolutely staggering 80-100-odd hours of play just to clear the main story. Though, if the mobile game’s anything to go by, the main story’s going to be a wild ride for sure. But after a dozen-odd hours, I can already say that the prospects are very promising and should be the benchmark for any gacha game that aims to be something else.
