FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles is the remaster of the 1997 tactical role-playing game, Final Fantasy Tactics. Developed by Square Enix’s Creative Studio III, the remastered edition aims to introduce the classic title to a new generation of players while preserving much of the core elements that made the original a cult classic. It was released on September 30, 2025.
In Ivalice, during a period of political turmoil following the death of the king, two warring factions—the Black Lion led by Prince Goltana and the White Lion led by Prince Larg—vie for control of the kingdom, as the heir to the throne is still an infant. This led to the Lion War. Players follow Ramza Beoulve, a young noble who becomes entangled in the conflict and uncovers deeper conspiracies involving the Glabados Church and magical artifacts known as the Zodiac Stones.
The Ivalice Chronicles retains the original’s isometric, grid-based battle system of the original. A hallmark feature is its job system, which allows characters to adopt various classes such as Knight, Wizard, and Summoner, each with different abilities and progression paths. The remaster introduces two modes: classic and enhanced. The former is a faithful recreation of the original experience, while the latter is, true to its name, an enhanced version featuring fully-voiced dialogue and a slew of quality-of-life improvements.

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles Chronicles is a tactical role-playing game that employs a turn-based combat system on isometric, grid-based battlefields. Each unit’s turn is determined by a Charge Time (CT) gauge, which fills based on the unit’s speed stat. Once the CT reaches 100, the unit can do an action, such as attacking, casting spells, or using items. Battlefield elements like terrain height, obstacles, and unit positioning are often crucial; for example, attacking an enemy from behind increases the chance of a successful hit and may deal more damage.
A central feature of the game is its job system, which has characters assume various classes, each with their own abilities and stat growth. Characters earn Job Points (JP) by performing actions in battle, which can be used to learn new skills within their current job class. Accumulating enough JP and meeting specific prerequisites unlocks advanced jobs. For instance, a character must attain a certain level in the Chemist job to access the Priest or Wizard classes.
Outside of battles, players can explore a world map consisting of interconnected nodes representing towns and battle locations. In towns, players gain access to shops to purchase equipment, recruit new units at Soldier Offices, and undertake side quests at Bars.
