Street Fighter V Gradually Dusts Itself Off

On Twitter (X), Capcom released a statement to celebrate the 8th anniversary of Street Fighter V where they expressed regret for past shortcomings while showing gratitude to its community. "After much reflection, the Street Fighter V development team worked hard to resolve the issues as much as possible during the middle and end stages of the game." Street Fighter V debuted in February 2016 amid high anticipation, but it faced negative reception and criticism for technical issues and lack of content.

Producer Yoshinori Ono conceded that the game was not fully polished upon release, with its beta version plagued by significant server problems. Additionally, months after the game's official release, it suffered from an 8-frame input latency issue that impacted high-level play.

Despite the rocky start, Capcom addressed the issues through updates and fixes over time. " In the end, we were able to add 45 playable characters, V-Skill, V-Trigger II, V-Shift, etc. to the battle system. Thanks to this, we were able to increase the number of players who have been playing SF V since 'Season 4'," wrote Capcom.

Street Fighter V witnessed a positive uptick in player engagement from 2018 onwards. The game currently has an overall 71% Positive rating on Steam today.

Moreover, Capcom credited the lessons learned from Street Fighter V's rocky development timeline, ensuring that future titles like Street Fighter 6 (SF6) avoided similar downfalls. "Above all, the most important thing was that we were able to utilize this reflection in SF6. I feel once again that we have progressed together with everyone over the past 8 years," stated the company.

Launched in June 2023, SF6 garnered critical acclaim and achieved an 86% 'Very Positive' rating on Steam since its release. SF6 set an unprecedented record for the number of competitors in 2023 at America's annual esport event—Evolution Championship Series .
