Square Enix Weighs In On AI In Book
“Easy-to-understand book on AI,” Says Staff
Square Enix is releasing a technical book on game AI with the goal of creating "the most easily understandable game AI book in Japan." The book was written by company staff involved in AI development who wanted AI to be more accessible to a broader audience of not only aspiring game developers, but to the masses as well who might be interested in the content.
スクウェア・エニックスのAI (Square Enix’s AI) will cover aspects of game AI in five parts, along with roundtable interviews and discussions with both younger staff members and the section leaders to give different perspectives, offering a deep dive into the very same AI technology that Square Enix developed and honed in house. These various aspects include definition of what game AI is, character definition, decision making systems, character interaction, meta AI, among others. It also includes sections on using AI to automate quality assurance procedures for games.
The book is now available for pre-order on Amazon Japan for 5,500 JPY, and will come out in Tankobon Softcover format with a total of 336 pages worth of content. As of writing, the book will only be available in Japanese, and there is no news if an English release is planned.
Square Enix Has Been In The AI Game For Some Time Now
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been in the spotlight for quite sometime, and Square Enix has dabbled upon it themselves. Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu had mentioned before that he had the intention to apply AI in both its content development and publishing functions in order to enhance development productivity and marketing efforts. The company also has previously showcased its experiments with AI generating fictional languages. However, while the technology definitely eases development, Square Enix is adamant on responsible usage of the tool.
