Elevating the Sequel Experience with the Umbral Realm
Lords of the Fallen 2 developers, CI Games, has dropped a fresh trailer showcasing the action RPG sequel. The trailer, which was unveiled on YouTube, highlighted what players can expect from the game’s Umbral realm, with the developers describing it as "bolder and bloodier."
The official trailer revealed new glimpses of the Umbral realm, now filled with apocalyptic backdrops and grotesque enemies. According to CI Games, the revamped Umbral in the sequel is "“…freakier, it’s creepier, and this time, it has teeth."

The Umbral realm system was Lords of the Fallen’s core gimmick, setting it apart from other Soulslike titles. Traversing the game doesn’t just take players through the physical realm of Axiom; the protagonist, the Lamp Bearer, must navigate the Umbral realm to overcome certain progression-blocking obstacles, such as walls and broken bridges. Additionally, instead of dying and respawning immediately, players are also transported into this alternate dimension after death, facing relentless hordes of enemies. This mechanic acts as a brutal penalty, pushing players into a realm even more difficult to survive.
While many considered it an interesting feature, it wasn't universally well-received. Players often felt the realm was too monotonous, and that visual clutter hampered the overall experience.
A separate dev blog, uploaded soon after on YouTube, discussed Lords of the Fallen 2’s upcoming changes. The developers admitted that the original Umbral realm had several issues, including "limited visual variety" and repetitive gameplay and encounters. In response, the sequel will introduce more biomes and a wider variety of enemy types that are as brutal as they are challenging. They also promised "more interactivity" and a "more organic experience" this time around.
Overall, the developers confirmed that moving between Umbral and Axiom will now be more seamless, with the veil between the two worlds thinner than before. Despite this smoother transition, the level of challenge across the two realms is higher, especially Umbral, which is given the feel of "a Soulslike horror game." How players overcome these encounters, however, will ultimately depend on their skill and approach.

Lords of the Fallen 2 does not yet have a definite release date, aside from its expected 2026 window for PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S. However, players eager to begin their journey can start with the first game, which was recently rumored to be included in PlayStation Plus Essential’s free offerings for the month of April.
