Nintendo announced that future digital titles it publishes, starting with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, will cost less than physical versions. Find out the company’s latest pricing strategy and statements regarding fan concerns.
Nintendo to Offer Different Pricing for Digital and Physical Games
Implementation to begin in May 2026, Starting with New Yoshi Title

Nintendo will introduce a different pricing strategy for digital versions of self-published titles on the Switch 2 beginning in May of 2026. Pre-orders of the upcoming platformer, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, are the first to see its implementation.
"Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games," stated the company via their official site. "As always, retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and pricing for each title may vary."
While this new strategy implies that digital versions of Nintendo-published Switch 2 games would cost less to reflect their ease of distribution, the statement’s neutral phrasing led to fan concerns about the company’s future releases. Nintendo would later clarify to IGN and Gizmodo that the cost of physical game titles "is not going up" and that digital versions will be priced lower.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book Listing Confusion

Before Nintendo’s follow-up statement, fans were unsure whether the company intended to lower digital or raise physical prices in the future.
Certain fans on X/Twitter and Reddit noticed that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book’s eShop page went live on March 10th and was priced at $59.99 to pre-order a digital copy of the game. As of today, the page now includes a listing for the physical version at $69.99, while the digital edition sits at the same cost.
As a result, some interpreted Nintendo’s new announcement as an intent to increase the price of physical copies of Nintendo Switch 2 games, expecting the digital version of the latest Yoshi title to decrease to $49.99.

Other fans pushed back, speculating that the game may have been initially priced at $69.99 but was dialed down to $59.99 for the digital release before its eShop page went live. With Nintendo clarifying that physical title prices will not be going up, it seems that the latter scenario may have been more likely.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is currently available for pre-order, ahead of its release on May 21, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch 2. To stay updated with the current news and gameplay of the upcoming platformer, check out our article below!
