Life is Strange: Double Exposure had a nearly hour-long feature showcase during the Tokyo Games Show 2024 under Square Enix! It revealed an exclusive look at the Japanese localization, as well as new storyline and gameplay footage!
Life is Strange: Double Exposure Turns Back Time for TGS 2024
Shares New Japanese Localizations for the Game
Life is Strange: Double Exposure was heavily featured during its standalone special broadcast for TFS 2024, hosted by Susumu Imadachi, alongside two developers that oversaw the title’s Japanese localization: Satoshi Akaishizawa, the localization producer, and Ken Rose, the localization Director. Akaishizawa was one of the people who had localized the first Life is Strange back in 2016 into Japanese, and Rose’s first ever western game he had played in Japanese was the original Life is Strange. The two seemed to have been fated to work together for the direct sequel of the first game, Double Exposure, after nearly eight years.
In lieu with talk of localization, the entire special broadcast graciously included subtitles for several different languages for international viewers–an accommodation that is very much appreciated amongst the Japanese-only streams, or the live-interpretation that often makes things confusing for both interpreters and viewers that dominated TGS 2024.
They quickly run down the four major characters that the new game will center around:
⚫︎ Max Caulfield, the series’ most iconic character, once again takes the protagonist's mantle several games later in a direct sequel to her story.
⚫︎ Saafi Fayyad is a new major character of which the new entry will center around, as the mystery of her sudden death spurs Max into action through her newfound powers.
⚫︎ Moses Muphy is another major character that acts as Max and Saafi’s close friend who is devastated at the shocking death.
⚫︎ Vince Alderman is the detective investigation put in charge into solving the unknowns of Saafi’s death, wherein he immediately suspects both Max and Moses due to their suspicious actions.
Exposes Max’s Newfound Powers in Action!
They also display Max’s new powers for the Japanese audience to see and understand. Contrary to her powers to rewind time in the first installment, Max can now see into a parallel world at the same time, peeking into the subtle or major differences between the two worlds. If she also saw fit, she could transport herself entirely into the other world, seamlessly physically teleporting between the realms as a means to achieve her needs. She’ll be utilizing her new powers as she tries to investigate Saafi’s death in her original timeline, while also trying to prevent the death of Saafi in the other, parallel world.
Extended Gameplay Footage, Both Old and New!
They were also able to showcase the Japanese version of the full gameplay reveal that was previously displayed a short while after the announcement of the game. They quickly experience the bond between Max, Saafi, and Moses as they await on top of a snow hill talking amongst each other as Moses patiently observes the stars. Max and Saafi engage in a contest where Max manages to convince Saafi to spill her secret about a publisher seemingly wanting to publish her poems, of which Max is elated to hear.
Afterwards, Saafi receives a phone call which makes Max wander around the nighttime scenery in search of relaxation or the next shot to take for her camera. During her short journey, she suddenly starts getting headaches and nosebleeds similar to when she would push herself to the limit using her time rewind powers all those years ago.
Then, she hears a gunshot.
She quickly races to look for Saafi, only to find her dead sitting on the bench with the latter’s camera that falls onto the ground. Moses races up and realizes what’s happened, and he calls for help as Max mourns the death of her new friend.
The second part of the gameplay reveal is never-before-seen footage that transpires after Saafi’s death, but also well-after Max’s discovery of her new powers. Here, she and Moses are in the school campus being interviewed by detective Alderman, where he is requesting to enter Moses’ office just to have a look through. However, although Moses is completely innocent in the player’s eyes, he still did something wrong– he took Saafi’s camera from the scene of the crime and hid it inside his locked office.
Max then takes it upon herself to use her powers to jump into the parallel world and talk to the Moses over there in hopes to figure out where he might hide something he’d wish an object to not be found. Afterwards, she goes back to her original world while still in Moses’ office to find herself within the locked office right under the detective’s nose.
The gameplay footage ends there as the hosts wrap up the extensive show. They go about the numerous different editions the game will have at launch, as well as its early access for the first two chapters two weeks before its official launch.
