Welcome To Vale Sangora
Follow The Dawnwalker Protagonist, Coen
The Blood of Dawnwalker just held its official game reveal event last January 16th, and it unveiled more details about the upcoming open-world dark fantasy action-RPG that is heavily focused on narrative.
Players will step into the boots of Coen, the Dawnwalker protagonist, whose life treads between day and night, living in a fictional 14th-century Medieval European land named Vale Sangora. Narrative director Jakub Szamalek described Coen as not a typical game protagonist, sharing that "He’s a young guy who at heart is emotional, he can get vulnerable, he’s honest about how he feels." As per the trailer, Coen runs in with the antagonist named Brencis, an ancient vampire who has seized control of Vale Sangora. In this dark world where human civilization is slowly crumbling, Coen is now tasked to save his family within the tight confines of 30 days and 30 nights. However, the developers noted that the game’s flow of time is slightly different, so players will be able to put in hours and hours upon gameplay.
In the reveal trailer, Coen is shown to be capable of superhuman things attributed to his vampiric status, like sliding down a huge building without getting a scratch, and phasing from one enemy to the next. Next thing you know, he will be wielding magic and throwing magic missiles on command. With the game still at its infancy, there are still tons of questions from fans that are left unanswered.
Rebel Wolves took to Discord to answer several of them. In the game’s official Discord server, a FAQ channel emerged after the game reveal event, providing the answers to the frequent queries of the emerging fanbase.
For starters, what exactly are Dawnwalkers? Dawnwalkers appear as humans during the day, but turn into vampires once hidden by the cloak of night. However, Rebel Wolves says that they are not simply half-human, half-vampire lifeforms—they are distinctly something else in between. And with that said, there will be no "flashy" magic going around despite its fantasy setting. As written in the FAQ, "Our magic is less flashy than that used in pure fantasy settings, and quite rare. It revolves around the occult -- rituals, amulets, relics, and summonings, rather than fireballs or lightning bolts."
A Narrative Sandbox Experience With Lots Of People To Meet
Coen is a Dawnwalker, tainted with the curse of silver poisoning, and is determined to save his family from an impending doom. However, despite the character’s quest, the developers said that the game will be a "narrative sandbox," where players will have as much control over the narrative as possible. There will be "maximum emphasis on player's agency and freedom to explore storylines with one clear goal but many, many ways to achieve it." With a plethora of ways to explore the world and its plot, the game will be totally nonlinear, and the world will be changing based on your choices.
With that being said, there will be no multiplayer or co-op mode in order to preserve this single-player campaign experience. However, there will be romanceable characters so that Coen won’t be lonely on this dark journey. Our protagonist will be able to meet individuals of all races, such as uriashi or kobolds…or perhaps even werewolves.
Rebel Wolves is a studio helmed by former CD Projekt Red developers who previously worked on games such as The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The Blood of Dawnwalker has no confirmed release window as of writing, but it is confirmed to be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X|S.
