Released on May 16 as the definitive Director's Cut edition, Ghost of Tsushima quickly achieved a peak concurrent player count of 77,154 on Steam just three days after the PC port launched.The action-adventure samurai game outperformed notable PlayStation titles such as God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man, and became Sony's best-performing single-player PC launch. The game already surpassed the all-time peak counts of God of War (2018), which reached 73,539, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, which hit 66,436.
Ghost of Tsushima is behind Sony's successful multiplayer shooter Helldivers 2, which boasts an all-time peak of 458,709 concurrent players on Steam. Helldivers 2 saw massive success with its simultaneous launch on PC via Steam and the PlayStation platform. PlayStation continues to look at amounting success, as of late, with their PC releases. The company experiences this during a time where its chairman, Hiroki Totoki, has openly stated that it will adopt a "two-pronged approach" of expanding into PC.
Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR'S CUT on Steam currently enjoys a 9/10 star rating with 'Positive' reviews. The game has been lauded for its gorgeous optimization for the PC and Steam Deck.
Both Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers 2 have faced their share of controversy amid achieving milestones, finding themselves in the middle of PSN-related drama. Helldivers 2 suffered backlash due to Sony's attempt to require a PSN account link for PC players, which led to a mass negative review bombing campaign and the game's temporary delisting in several countries. Although Sony retracted the PSN requirement for Helldivers 2, it remained in place for Ghost of Tsushima's online co-op mode.
