Dispatch Episode 4: Who to Romance?

Dispatch

SPOILER WARNING: This article will discuss plot points in Dispatch Episodes 1-8 and the digital comic books. If you haven’t caught up yet, do proceed with caution.

Dispatch Episode 4 finally makes progress when it comes to Robert’s two love interests. Read on to learn more about them, the big decision at the end of Episode 4, and what it could mean for the rest of the series.

Who to Romance: Blonde Blazer or Invisigal?

Follow Your Heart; You Know It to be True

Dispatch

Anyone who’s played through Dispatch Episode 4 knows how tough that final decision can feel. Episode 3 ended with a painful choice that didn’t have a "right" answer, but Episode 4 feels like it has no wrong one. By the end of it, Robert has to decide who he wants to spend his evening with: a dinner date with Blonde Blazer or a movie with Invisigal. It’s not the biggest choice in the world, but for many, this is still a big deal. This is the first decision that has us, as Robert, choosing either of the two romance options after half a season’s worth of tension building up between him and these characters.

Of course, you could’ve avoided flirting with either of them throughout the earlier episodes. The game, after all, doesn’t force these romances on you; it does, though, give you small moments between Robert and the two superheroes to decide how far you want their relationship to go.

However, even if you’ve kept things professional until now, the ending of Episode 4 doesn’t let you stay neutral. You have to pick who Robert spends the evening with, and no, you can’t bail and just hang out with Beef, his dog, instead.

Dispatch Episode 4 Final Decision

Let me set the scene: At the end of Episode 4, after a long day’s work, Robert finds himself alone in the office, debating whether to finally head home to his empty apartment or pass the time in the office. Just as he’s about to pack up, an alert flashes on his computer: Invisigal is "outside coverage area." It turns out she’s fine, just watching a rom-com alone at the movies. The two talk for a while, until his phone buzzes. Robert receives a text from Blonde Blazer, asking him if he’s free for a late dinner. He then pauses, unsure of who to respond to.

Again, there is no wrong answer here. Both Blonde Blazer and Invisigal have their own appeal, and most players will probably choose based on who they’ve grown attached to more or maybe who they’ve fallen for after a few scenes of "propaganda." The game doesn’t punish you for choosing one over the other, but whichever option you go with, "X will remember that."

“Dinner with Blazer”

Dispatch

If you choose to have dinner with Blonde Blazer, Robert goes to the courtyard outside the SDN office. She’s still wearing the same dress from the gala she attended, the one Robert zips up earlier in the episode, standing under the dim lights of the courtyard tree. She looks composed, but there’s a nervous energy to her. Before the dinner begins, she tells Robert, "This isn’t what I look like." She hesitates, then says she’ll just show him what she means. She takes off her necklace and floats briefly, her body surrounded by light. When the glow fades, it is revealed that, contrary to her superhero alias Blonde Blazer, she is actually a brunette who is a couple of inches shorter than her superhero persona. That’s all she meant.

It’s quite an endearing moment. Blonde Blazer, or Mandy as we learn, clearly struggles with her own image and what people expect of her. She worries that Robert might be disappointed, which says a lot about how much her heroic persona has started to blur with her sense of self.

Dispatch

We see more of this side of her in the Shellshock comic, included with the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition. It follows Blonde Blazer and Phenomaman after Episode 2, when they were still a couple on a date in Tokyo. Paparazzi swarm them, and while Phenomaman enjoys the attention, Mandy is clearly tired—tired of the fame, tired of the noise, tired of pretending the mask is all there is to her.

She tells him she wants to live a normal life, one where she’s not "Blonde Blazer" all the time. Phenomaman still views their relationship through the lens of heroism, as if they’re partners in justice first, a couple second. Mandy admits that she wants something simpler, something human, a life not defined by her superpowers. When Phenomaman fails to understand, she ends things with him.

Dispatch

In the courtyard, when we see her with Robert, it’s apparent that she’s still figuring out how to balance who she is versus who the world expects her to be. She confides that "people have expectations, and they never meet me first—it’s always the superhero." It’s an honest admission that humanizes her in a way we haven’t seen before, unless, of course, you purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition and read the comic book first.

From there, Robert can choose how to respond: either offer his usual comforting words as a friend or lean in for a kiss. Whichever you pick, the moment feels very genuine, an unguarded break from everything else happening around them.

It’s a payoff that’s been a long time coming. Ever since their shared moment on the billboard near the Hollywood sign back in Episode 1, the tension between Robert and Blonde Blazer has been slowly building. Whether you chose to kiss her back then or not, the chemistry is unmistakable here. For the first time in perhaps a long time, she is being vulnerable, as Mandy.

“Movie with Invisigal”

Dispatch

If you choose to go to the movies with Invisigal, Robert replies to Blonde Blazer’s dinner invitation with a "rain check?" before turning his attention back to Invisigal. He asks her for a recap of what happened in the first installment of the movie she’s about to see, a harmless question that sets her off on a 20-minute ramble while the trailers play. She’s clearly into it, explaining every plot twist. He lets her talk, or at least, that’s what it seems like. While she was talking, Robert was already on his way. He appears by Invisigal, popcorn and candy in hand, things that Invisigal admitted earlier she never buys for herself since she’d rather sneak into the theater with her powers.

Invisigal looks surprised for a second, but she hides it with her usual humor. "So, what’re we like, friends now?" she asks, trying to sound offhand, but the line feels very telling. In Episode 3, during the playground scene, she talks about her powers like a curse, saying that having "supervillain powers" means she’s bound to end up bad no matter how hard she tries to do the opposite. There’s a lot of insecurity under her sarcasm, and it shows again here in Episode 4. The idea of someone believing in her and wanting to spend time with her, without judgment, clearly throws her off.

Dispatch

Her usual defense mechanism kicks in—humor laced with innuendo. "I’m not gonna f*ck you just ‘cause you bought me a bucket of corn," she says, half-joking. Robert laughs, brushing it off with, "Can you just be normal for like, a second?"

It’s an easy exchange between them. There’s no tension nor awkward silence, as the two characters figure out how to exist around each other outside of work. They talk over each other for a bit before Invisigal says, "This is nice." It’s not big of a moment compared to Blonde Blazer’s, but it means something to her, and, perhaps, to him too.

Robert asks if she likes Sour Patch Kids. She looks at him, eyes lingering at his a little longer than normal, and says she loves them. Their heads are close, their voices low. It’s hard to tell what this means, or if it means anything at all. It’s not transparently romantic, not in the same way his scene with Blonde Blazer is, where the two could actually share a kiss, but it carries something just as strong.

Dispatch

Of course, the whole thing could easily be read as two friends hanging out, nothing more. It’s a valid take. Unlike Blonde Blazer, Invisigal has no prequel comic to add more context, but the scene says enough on its own. This one’s all in the glances, the pauses, the space between them. It juxtaposes with Invisigal’s earlier crude sexual comments and explicit dream sequence. Regardless of whether or not it leads to future romance, it’s a wonderfully wholesome moment for the two.

Changes Depending on Who You Romance

Dispatch

Like the choice of who you cut in Episode 3, who you choose to romance in Episode 4 doesn’t drastically change the story, but it does add small moments that help flesh out Robert’s relationships and show a bit more of who he is beneath the thick voice and the exhaustion. It’s not a huge branch, but it gives more texture to scenes that would otherwise just move the plot forward.

Changes in Episode 5 and 6

If you choose to have dinner with Blonde Blazer and start a romance with her, the first noticeable change appears in the first few minutes of Episode 5. After a workout, Robert changes in a seemingly empty locker room when Blonde Blazer walks in. She brings up their dinner the night before, saying she had a good time and asking if he’d want to go on a "real date" sometime. Robert asks if that’d be a date with Blonde Blazer or with Mandy. She throws the question back at him, saying she’s both. Regardless of which you pick—Blonde Blazer, Mandy, or "either works"—she ends the conversation with, "I’ll let you know when I come up with something." Galen, a dispatcher with superhearing, appears just to say, "Bro, you’re so lucky."

We don’t explicitly see what she means by she’ll "come up with something." What’s clear, though, is that she genuinely cares for him. When Robert returns from the hospital later in the said episode, she looks visibly relieved that he’s okay and hugs him tightly. If you don’t romance her, the same moment plays out, but she only looks concerned; no hug, too.

That difference continues into the housewarming party. As everyone drinks and dances, Robert stands off to the side watching. Blonde Blazer grabs him and drags him into the crowd to dance. Invisigal glances at the two from a distance, her eyes lowering, perhaps a subtle sign of jealousy. Just before Blonde Blazer leaves, she kisses Robert on the cheek.

If you choose to go the other route and join Invisigal in the movies, you obviously don’t get the locker room scene with Blonde Blazer. Instead, Robert gets an extended exchange with Invisigal in Episode 5’s bar scene. Here, Robert and Invisigal talk more openly. She calls their movie night a "first date." the player gets three dialogue choices, two of which shut the idea of it being a date down, and one where Robert says, "I had a good time." She teases him about eating popcorn too loudly while she sat silently during the movie, and when Robert mentions it, she fires back with a playful line—"you might like me loud sometime"—which she immediately confirms as a sexual innuendo before heading to grab them a table.

Just like Blonde Blazer in her route, Invisigal also pulls Robert for a dance during the Episode 6 party. Chase watches them from across the room, his expression unreadable, echoing Invisigal’s own reaction in the other route. The tension feels similar, though less rooted in jealousy and more in prejudice.

Changes in Episodes 7 and 8

Dispatch

Like in the earlier episodes, Episode 4 sets up several scenes that play out differently depending on who you choose to romance. If Robert romances Blonde Blazer, the game sprinkles in more intimate moments that show their relationship. By the time you reach Episode 7, one of the first things you see is Blonde Blazer taking Robert’s hand, kissing his knuckles, and checking on him after everything that happened the night before. It’s a quick moment, but it shows how deeply she cares when you pursue her route.

Even if Robert doesn’t romance her, though, Blonde Blazer remains a solid friend to Robert. She still shows up for him when it matters the most. In Episode 7, when Robert gets captured and tortured by Shroud and the Red Ring, she’s the one who bursts in to save him. She does this without hesitation, fully ready to risk her life to get him out. The same thing happens in Episode 8: she jumps in again during the final confrontation with Shroud, whether you’re romancing her or not.

Dispatch

There is one significant difference that comes up depending on your earlier Episode 4 choice with her. During the final fight, there’s a moment where Shroud knocks Blonde Blazer down, and Z-Team tries to take him on together. They get nowhere here. Shroud is always one step ahead and can read their next moves before they even commit to them. Just as shroud is about to strike Robert, Chase suddenly appears wearing Blonde Blazer’s amulet, which gives him her powers and supercharges his speed.

Blonde Blazer then crawls out from the rubble and explains what happened. If you agreed to go on a date with her in Episode 4, she tells Robert that she passed the amulet to Chase because "he was the only one I told about my amulet, so I figured Shroud wouldn’t see it coming." If you rejected her dinner invitation, she instead reveals, "You’re not the only one who wasn’t born with powers," and only then explains that her abilities come from that amulet. It’s a nice touch that shows the consistency of her actions, romanced or not.

Dispatch

After Shroud’s defeat, Z-Team celebrates, and Blonde Blazer—still as Mandy—sits on top of a car catching her breath. Now that Chase has her amulet and her powers, she’s stuck adjusting to the idea of living without them for the time being. Robert takes the chance to shoot his shot and awkwardly asks her if she has plans for the night, stumbling through what is basically him asking if she wants to make out later. Mandy shuts down the awkwardness with a kiss and says, "It was perfect." The two hold hands until the team calls them over for a group photo.

Dispatch

Things are much more complicated if you decide to pursue a romance with Invisigal. By Episode 7, the team is fed up with her. After Episode 6’s ending, they feel she’s become too much of a liability, and they push Robert to cut her from the team. You can either defend her or agree with them, but either way the tension is there. In the locker room scene that follows, it’s apparent that Invisigal heard the entire argument. Robert can tell her he cares about her or reassure her that what happened wasn’t her fault. But the real blow comes when she confesses the truth: she was the one who destroyed Robert’s Mecha Man suit back in Episode 1.

It’s the fan theory many players picked up on. There's a small line from the villain Toxic in Episode 1—"Great. All going to plan. Now get outta there, babe"—that explains how a bomb ended up in the back of the suit without anyone being close enough to plant it. It also fits with what is known about Invisigal joining SDN a few months prior under the condition that no one ask questions.

Dispatch Episode 7 Choice: Lean In or Lean Out?

Players can then forgive her or cut ties entirely. If Robert has romanced her, Invisigal admits, "All I wanted from this was for you to look at me the same way you look at Blazer… even if it was just once, you know? That’d have been enough." Robert can respond that he doesn’t understand, and she replies, with longing, "Yes, you do."

Even if Robert has been romancing her, she seems to be expressing a desire for the same kind of recognition and respect he gives Blonde Blazer as a hero. Regardless, she leaves invisibly, only to return moments later to kiss Robert while still unseen. This scene can trigger if the player’s choices have been consistent enough to establish a romance with Invisigal.

Players can choose to "lean in" or "lean out." Leaning in shows Robert cares for her, but she still leaves, torn. Leaning out hurts her and shuts down her romance path altogether.

Dispatch

By Episode 8, no one on the team trusts her anymore. Royd even ties her to a table to keep an eye on her. The twist is that Invisigal actually was a mole under Shroud’s control, but by this point she’s trying to break free from that. If you mentored her well and built a strong bond, she eventually takes a bullet for Robert in the final fight. After the decision to spare or kill Shroud, Robert rushes to her side, and the two watch the sunrise together. If Robert romanced her, they try to kiss, but she ultimately collapses from her injuries.

In the aftermath, Invisigal is wheeled into an ambulance while Z-Team celebrates. She and Robert forgive each other, and she teases him about having "something on his lips." Before he can check, she grabs him for a kiss as Z-Team watches and mocks them from a distance. Robert flips them off, and they continue kissing without a care in the world.

Later, Robert sits with Mandy on top of the car, and she jokes, "That was quite a kiss she laid on you. Gonna have to talk to HR about that." Robert admits he hasn’t really thought about it, but Mandy waves it off, saying she’s only teasing. "Make her happy… ‘cause god knows she’s f*ckin’ miserable."

What This Could Mean in the Future

As mentioned earlier, there’s really no wrong answer here. In games like Stray Gods or anything from Telltale, who you choose to grow close to usually circles back later. Based on subsequent episodes, we can conclude that Dispatch is no different.

Of course, the choice doesn’t have to be romantic at all. Just because Episode 4 pushes Robert to pick who he wants to spend the evening with doesn’t mean the game locks you into pursuing that romance option. You can play things purely platonic. His moment with Invisigal doesn’t have to carry romantic tension, and he doesn’t have to kiss Blonde Blazer if you’ve been avoiding flirtatious dialogue in earlier episodes. There’s even an achievement called "We Can Just Be Friends," where Robert can "Keep Romance Out of the Workplace." That’s a valid path to take, especially for players who want Robert’s focus to stay on the mission rather than his love life.

Dispatch

There is technically a way to romance both Blonde Blazer and Invisigal, but it's not a true "harem" ending for Robert. The game can end with the system acknowledging that Robert romanced both, but also recognizing that "it's complicated."

This outcome is achieved if Robert is on the path to romance Blonde Blazer but chooses to "lean in" for the kiss with Invisigal in Episode 7’s locker room scene.

Shroud calls Robert out on this in Episode 8, stating, "I knew you'd fall for them both... to be with Blonde Blazer and think you deserve more. You chump!" Blonde Blazer notices this. The game plays out normally afterward, but the ending you get is the one attached to Invisigal being your romance option.

Dispatch

Nevertheless, the community is obviously torn in half about who to choose between the two. However it plays out, it might be best to just enjoy the moment with whoever you choose to spend the night with; leave all your worries and theories for tomorrow morning.
