Dispatch Episode 6: What Happens to Chase?

Dispatch

SPOILER WARNING: This article will discuss plot points in Dispatch Episodes 1-6. If you haven’t caught up yet, do proceed with caution.

Dispatch Episode 6 ends with one of the most heartbreaking moments in the game. Read on to find out Chase’s fate and the reasons behind his actions.

Chase, a Hero

“Keep Up,” Says the Old Man

Dispatch

I still can’t believe what happened at the end of Dispatch Episode 6. Even after watching that final scene twice, I was just sitting there, staring at the end credits, trying to process it. And judging by the reaction across internet forums, I’m definitely not the only one. The episode’s ending has left nearly everyone in disbelief over what happened to Chase, arguably one of the most likable characters in the game so far.

Episode 6 final scene begins lightheartedly enough, during Robert’s surprise housewarming party. Z-Team, Blonde Blazer, Royd, and Chase are all gathered, drinking beer and dancing to some good music. Between the jokes and the laughter, though, they’re also trying to pinpoint the last known location of the Astral Pulse. They narrow it down to "a warehouse near the docks." The problem is, it’s heavily guarded, so Blonde Blazer suggests postponing the operation until the next night so they can plan with SDN and avoid unnecessary risks.

But Invisigal refuses to wait. "There’s no guarantee it’ll be there tomorrow," she insists. Chase, a few drinks in and clearly frustrated, snaps at her. The argument escalates until Invisigal punches him in the face and storms out, leaving an uncomfortable silence in her wake.

Dispatch

Later that night, after everyone has left, Robert and Chase have a sobering conversation that reflects on their notions of the people who make up Z-Team. But this short breather doesn’t last long. It turns out that Invisigal went off on her own to retrieve the Astral Pulse, and the warehouse is in disarray from all the villains tearing each other apart to get to it first. Amid the smoke and gunfire, Robert leads Invisigal to the device, only to be ambushed by Shroud, who tosses a smoke grenade that leaves her choking and gasping for air.

As Invisigal struggles to breathe, the camera cuts to Chase in his superhero pose, muttering a soft "keep up" before activating his powers one last time and sprinting across the city in super speed to reach Invisigal. He carries her out into the open. After making sure she is fine, Chase takes small steps, exhausted, then collapses. Episode 6 ends with desperate attempts—Invisigal performing chest compressions; Robert rushing to Chase’s side.

It’s one of the most devastating cliffhangers in Dispatch. Fans are already replaying scenes, testing dialogue options, hoping there’s a version of events where Chase survives. But from how things look now, it’s hard to stay optimistic.

Does Chase Die?

Dispatch

Chase’s fate in Episode 6 isn’t fully confirmed, but based on what we’ve seen so far and the hints scattered throughout the earlier episodes, it seems likely that this is the end for him. It’s hard to imagine Dispatch without Chase, but narratively, it’s an ending that fits him. He’s a man with super speed, a power that was once his pride but has eventually become the reason for his rapid aging, a catch he didn’t realize earlier in his career.

As he says, "I could move fifty times faster than the average person, but I didn’t realize until it was too late that I was aging fifty times faster when I used my powers." He’s only 39, yet he looks decades older, resembling a "Black Einstein," Robert jokes. It’s ironic; his powers, the very thing that defined him as a hero, is also what stole his youth.

This burden is the very reason for his resentment toward Z-Team. Chase was forced to give up his life as a superhero; the Z-Team, meanwhile, squandered their abilities by choosing villainy. Even though they are now trying to turn their lives around, he can’t fully let go of his bias. Being a superhero, to him, is a calling, and when he sees the Z-Team treating it like work, like something you clock in and out of, it gets under his skin.

Dispatch Telling Robert He Has Always Been a Good Person

His conversation with Robert in Episode 6 digs into that idea. When Chase asks, "Do you ever think about why we help people?" and Robert answers, "it’s just the right thing to do," Chase agrees but immediately questions if Z-Team could ever understand that. This shows how his view here is rather black-and-white. You’re either a superhero who does good, or a supervillain who does the opposite.

Robert narrates his talk with Invisigal in Episode 3, where she talks about her powers like a curse, saying that having "supervillain powers" means she’s bound to end up bad no matter how hard she tries. When Chase argues that Robert being a hero is inherent, which "makes us different from a thief like her," Robert pushes back by reminding Chase of the time he himself stole things for Robert’s sake, proof that even so-called heroes can do bad things, and that being a villain doesn’t necessarily make someone irredeemable.

Chase doesn’t completely let go of his beliefs, but he admits, "I guess I hadn’t considered some things."

Can We Save Chase?

Dispatch

At the moment, it doesn’t look like you can save Chase. No matter what choices you make in previous episodes, his fate doesn’t seem to change. He’ll still use his powers to save Invisigal, even knowing what it’ll do to him. Maybe that’s just who Chase is—someone who does the right thing because it’s the right thing. It fits the kind of hero he’s been built up to be across the game. It’s what being a hero means to him.

You see this similar mindset back in Episode 5, when he and Robert talk about the Red Ring, Shroud’s crime syndicate. The idea of killing Shroud comes up. Robert likens this to bees: "We kill the queen, we rot the hive." Chase doesn’t buy into that logic. He pushes back, asking if Robert could actually go through with it.

Dispatch Questioning Robert

Shroud killed Robert’s father and destroyed his Mecha Man suit. If anyone had reason to seek revenge, it’s him. Players can choose to say "yes," that they would kill Shroud, but Chase disagrees. Even knowing what Shroud has done, even understanding how cruel he is, Chase still doesn’t think vengeance is the answer.

"Heroes don’t kill people," Robert can also say instead, and Chase agrees instantly. "That’s the good guy answer," he tells him, like a simple truth he’s lived by all this time.

This sense of morality, however, often clashes with his personal biases.

Dispatch

In earlier episodes, his particular distrust toward Invisigal was blinding. Robert calls him out for it in the hospital scene of Episode 6, noting how Chase seems especially hard on her. Chase deflects, saying it’s because Robert is getting too close to her, and so Robert can’t see her the way he does. However, there doesn’t seem to be a real conviction behind this. The truth is, Chase can’t see past her past, even if he knows she’s trying to change. "I know you’re a liar. A criminal. I know you’re [...] dangerous," he yells at Invisigal during their argument in the housewarming party.

Despite his hatred for her, Chase proves exactly who he is. When Invisigal’s life is on the line, he doesn’t hesitate. He knows what using his powers again will do to him, his body won’t be able to handle it, but he runs anyway. There’s a smile on his face when moves, a flash of the man he used to be, before the consequences of his gift caught up to him. He gets to be himself again, the hero who runs toward danger without thinking twice, to save Invisigal.

It’s a bittersweet scene that hits harder once you remember his earlier conversation in Episode 1, where he jokes about how he would do something heinous "if it meant being able to use my powers again."

“The Answers Are Out There…”

Dispatch

We don’t know whether Chase is truly gone, but his actions in Episode 6 stays consistent with his beliefs as a hero. All we see is him collapsing, his body giving out after one last burst of speed. There’s no confirmation of his death yet. Maybe we’ll see him again in the next episode, in a hospital bed, hooked up to machines, cracking a joke at Robert’s expense.

Copium aside, if he really is gone, it wouldn’t feel out of place. His death could push Z-Team, Robert especially, into finally taking on Shroud once and for all. The question is whether Robert will stick to what Chase believed in or if he’ll give in to his anger. Will he "kill the queen," or will he choose the "good guy answer"?

All we can do is wait for Episode 7 and hold onto a bit of hope that, somehow, Chase not only makes it, but that all our lingering questions are finally answered. We have to remember that "the answers are out there… if you just listen to the wind…"
