Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios just revealed at a GDC panel that it isn’t planning to release any expansions, DLC, or sequels to 2023’s GOTY. Read on to learn more about their announcement and what else Larian has in store for Baldur’s Gate 3.
Larian Studios Will Be Stepping Away From D&D
Patches Will Continue, Then They’re Moving On
It looks like the adventure had to end somewhere. As revealed by Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke at today’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) panel, the developer isn’t planning to release any expansions, DLC, or sequels to 2023’s GOTY, Baldur’s Gate 3.
Vincke clarified that, instead, the studio will be moving away from the D&D IP entirely and doing something new, leaving the much-beloved TTRPG in publisher Wizards of the Coast’s hands.
This was a major upset considering the game’s resounding success in all platforms on release and well into the next year. Many were certain that this meant a DLC or expansion was in the books for Baldur’s Gate 3, although the most that Larian has released in terms of post-launch content is a playable epilogue party with additional game modes—a substantial injection of content, but still not a true expansion.
Larian Studios senior product manager Tom Butler previously commented on the possibility of a DLC, although the studio was more interested in releasing patches at the time.
"We'll carry on patching for a while and then we're all going to take a holiday and then we'll figure out what we do next," Butler said at the time. "But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don't know what yet."
Possibility of A New Divinity Game in The Works
Before their award-winning attempt at the Baldur’s Gate series, Larian Studios previously worked on the Divinity series, which could be getting another entry now that the studio is looking to step away from D&D.
In an interview with IGN shortly before BG3’s release, Vincke said that a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin was "definitely on the horizon", but the team needed to work on Baldur’s Gate 3 first. Vincke later clarified that their next project for that series won’t be Divinity: Original Sin 3, saying that it will be "different than what you think it is" but that it's "still familiar."
What’s to Come For The Baldur’s Gate Series
It’s currently unclear what Wizards of the Coast and their parent company Hasbro have in store for the Baldur’s Gate series, though it’s undeniable that Baldur’s Gate 3 alone has been a major commercial and critical success. The game has been a major chart-topper on Steam since its release, rivaled only by other big-ticket titles released in the same period like Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2.
