Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Overview
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a new reboot and retelling of the classic Prince of Persia franchise made by Ubisoft. Released on January 18, 2024, the game provides a different take on the series by being a modern Metroidvania. This in contrast to the last major titles in the franchise, The Forgotten Sands, being 3d action adventure games that were last released in the 2010s.
The story follows Sargon, a member of an elite group of warriors called the Immortals. They serve the royal family of Persia, where Sargon is the primary guard for Prince Ghassan, of which he is close friends with. The Immortals are tasked with protecting the kingdom, and after a great battle from which they have repelled an incoming invasion, they are celebrated and commended as heroes. However, during the festivities, their own mentor and general takes the prince into captivity and escapes to Mount Qaf. The Immortals quickly chase after the traitor, only to find the mysterious land full of the undead and space time anomalies. Together, the group must brave through the interconnected halls, caves, and corridors teeming with enemies to save the Prince of Persia before it’s too late.
Play as Sargon as he fights his way through numerous types of enemies with the use of his weapons. Follow him as he navigates and platforms his way through corridors, up ledges and ladders, down pitfalls, and through time anomalies.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Gameplay
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2.5D action-adventure platformer Metroidvania. Gamers will play as Sargon as they travel through huge interconnected environments and locations teeming with enemies and platforming elements. Featuring a gigantic map, Sargon is able to run, jump, slide, and dash to reach his goals in order to explore. Extra challenge is provided with the addition of pitfalls, spikes, and walls that are lethal for Sargon, forcing players to be skillful and precise with their movement. The hero eventually gains access to multiple time-related abilities which will be pivotal in solving certain puzzles that are located across the game.
Aside from exploration, Sargon will be engaging with stylish combat with the use of his pair of swords, Qas and Layla. He is able to perform combos upon enemies, as well as parry strikes in order to fill up a meter and unleash a special attack when full. He also makes use of his time powers in battle to rush through opponents or teleport to dodge enemy attacks. Though the swords are his main weapons, players will eventually find other weapons such as the bow and the chakram, allowing for quick weapon switches between attacks, resulting in a devastating flurry of attacks and combos.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Reviews
Diamond in the Rough
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was released to high praise for its excellent modern take of a Metroidvania for a storied franchise with 2D roots. We at Game8 highlighted its rewarding exploration, challenging bosses, stylish combat, and amazing Persian-inspired set-pieces.
IGN awarded it with a ‘Great’ at 8/10, praising its precise controls during platforming and combat that harkens back to its 2D roots. Eurogamer gave it 4/5 stars, praising how it lets players freely and creatively use time powers that solidifies it as a true Prince of Persia game. Kotaku also commends the developers for achievement the perfect blend of a Metroidvania, between being exceptionally fun, accessible, and challenging. However, PC Gamer rated at 72/100, pointing out its mediocre story and the slow start for players to reach the better portions of the game.
The general public rates the game highly, where on Metacritic, it has garnered a ‘Generally Favorable’ grade from both critics and from users, achieving ratings of 86/100 and 8.4/10 respectively. PlayStation users have also voted for an exceptional 4.44/5 star rating on the platform.
However, even with all of the high praises and generally positive reception, the game failed to reach wider popularity, resulting in poor sales, being unable to reach targeted expectations.
