Super Mario Party Jamboree Overview

Super Mario Party Jamboree is a multiplayer party game, and it retains much of the series’ core board-game-style gameplay, where players navigate themed boards to collect coins, purchase stars, and aim to outscore opponents. The game introduces a mix of new and returning boards, such as Mario’s Rainbow Castle from the first Mario Party game and Western Land from Mario Party 2, alongside new ones like Mega Wiggler’s Tree Party and King Bowser’s Keep.

The title boasts 112 mini-games, the largest collection in the series thus far, ranging from 4-player free-for-alls to team-based competitions and rhythm challenges. Additionally, the game supports various play modes, such as Koopathlon, which allows for large-scale multiplayer contests.

Released on October 17, 2024, Super Mario Party Jamboree is the 19th game in the long-running Mario Party series. While the game encourages playing with friends and family, online or offline, the game also features a single-player mode called Party-Planner Trek, where players can collect Mini Stars, complete quests, and unlock decorations for their Party Plaza.

Super Mario Party Jamboree Gameplay

The central gameplay of Super Mario Party Jamboree revolves around the Mario Party mode, where up to four players take turns navigating game boards and competing in minigames. Players roll dice to determine how many spaces they can move on the board. These game boards can often have their own gimmicks, like catching a train in Western Land or avoiding rising tides in Goomba Lagoon. Collecting coins through these winning minigames allows players to purchase stars. The player with the most stars when the game ends is the winner.

The game introduces a variety of new features and game modes. The Jamboree Buddy system allows players to team up with CPU-controlled allies who offer perks like extra dice rolls or increased coin rewards. For solo players, Party Planner Trek offers a campaign where players complete tasks to earn rewards and unlock decorations. Minigame Bay provides access to over 110 minigames, including boss rushes and themed challenges. Cooperative experiences like Rhythm Kitchen and Toad’s Item Factory utilize motion controls, while competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes like Koopathlon and Bowser Kaboom Squad support up to 20 and 8 players online, respectively.

Critic reviews for Super Mario Party Jamboree on Metacritic averaged at 82 out of 100, with a range of opinions from different outlets. Game8 awarded the game a 70 out of 100. While they praised the game for introducing new minigames, they also acknowledged that their quality could be inconsistent. IGN, on the other hand, was more enthusiastic, giving the game a 9 out of 10 and calling it one of the best in the series, albeit with some less memorable side offerings.

GameSpot and Eurogamer took a more critical stance, with GameSpot scoring the game a 6 out of 10 and Eurogamer awarding it 2 stars out of 5. Both outlets noted that while the core Mario Party gameplay remains fun, the game’s focus on quantity over quality and reliance on chance rather than skill diminishes the overall experience.

User reviews on Metacritic averaged at 8.9 and generally reflect positive sentiment towards the main Party Mode. However, some users were dissatisfied with the use of motion controls and the lackluster nature of many minigames.
